Akron Register-Tribune: Charles Kanago Sr., one of the first pioneer settlers of western Plymouth County, Iowa, bas gone to his final reward, passing away Tuesday morning, October 10, 1916, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. D. L. Waterbury, in Akron, aged 78 years, 10 months and 4 days. He had been in declining health for several years and about a year and a half ago submitted to an operation for cancer. He was a great sufferer at times, but he fought a good fight against the inroads of disease, and faced the inevitable with remarkable courage and fortitude, while the unremitting care of loved ones made easier his declining days. Charles Kanago was born in Mariestad, Sweden, December 6, 1837. He was married to Carrie Larson In 1862. They came to America in the autumn of 1868, and located at Winona, Minnesota. In the fall of the following year they moved to Plymouth County Iowa, and homesteaded In Johnson Township. It was there In the late 60's and 70's that they endured the rigors and hardships and privations of pioneer days. Mr. Kanago many times made the round trip to Sioux City on for and packed provisions back home for his family. There were the bleak winters, the grasshopper raids and hard times, but this worthy couple toiled through it all, reared a large family and lived to enjoy the fruits of their labors, respected and esteemed by all who knew them. Four years ago they moved from the farm and have since resided In Akron with their daughter. Six children were born to them—four sons, Charles and Hugo, at Adaville, Iowa; Mrs. Marvin Brown, Of Artesian, South Dakota; Myron, of Webster, South. Dakota; Mrs. Delbert L. Waterbury, of Akron. Besides the aged wife and children, he is also survived by one brother, August, and thirteen grandchildren. His demise is the first break in the home circle. The funeral services were held on Friday at the home in Akron and the remains taken to Adaville for Interment. Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel Tuesday, October 17, 1916 Le Mars, Iowa
