Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel Tuesday, February 21, 1939 Le Mars, Iowa Akron mourns the passing of a pioneer citizen, since on Thursday afternoon, February 16, at 1:30 o'clock, Charles O. Kanago passed away at his home after a brief illness. Although Mr. Kanago has been in poor health the last two years , he was only confined to his bed a short time. Charles O. Kanago was born in Sweden, Sept. 20, 1865. He came to America In the spring of 1869, with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kanago Sr., who located on a farm near Winona, Minnesota. The following spring, he with his parents moved to Iowa, to a farm a mile west of Adaville, they being among the first settlers In that community. They passed through all the hardships of pioneer life the scourge of grasshoppers, droughts, as well as the famous blizzard, but they lived to more prosperous days. At that time the present site of Akron was merely known as part of Portland township. They remember when the railroad was built through here, as well a s watching the town grow. Mr. Kanago with his father did both farming and carpenter work, and when young he met with a serious accident which left him handicapped through life. Mr. Kanago received infant baptism in the Lutheran church, his parents being of that faith. On October 30, 1895, he was united in marriage to Miss Lottie E. Fletcher . This was a double ceremony, at which time her sister, Ida, and H. B. Morehead were married. Mr. and Mrs. Kanago were blessed with five children, two of whom, Avon and Opal, died in Infancy. The others are Glen, who resides on the Kanago farm, Mrs. Doris Campbell, and Mrs. Ina Young, both of Akron. There are also three grandchildren, and two brothers, Myron of Webster , S.D., and Hugo of Le Mars. In 1917, he moved with his family to Akron where he has since resided. Mr. Kanago has affiliated with the First Baptist Church, of which his family are members, and during most of this time he has served as a trustee. His years of service to the church in so many ways will never be fully estimated. He was faithful in attendance until ill health prevented, but even after that his many acts of service continued until Christmas time when he was forced to give up. He had a quiet, patient, unpretentious way of going about these tasks which very few knew about. Mr. Kanago was known as a kind and loving husband and father; and an upright and highly esteemed citizen; standing always for high ideals. At one time he served on the town council and for six years was a member of the school board. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the First Baptist church with Rev. Leslie Williams officiating. Interment was made in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery at Adaville. Relatives from a distance who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Hugo Kanago of Le Mars; Mrs. M. E. Kanago, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Kanago, and Elmer Kanago of Webster, S. D. Percy Kanago of Omaha, Neb.; Charles and Andrew Larson, of Mead, Neb.; Mrs. Ida Morehead of Le Mars; Mr. and Mrs. Verle Morehead, Mrs. Irene Nigg, of Sioux City; Mr. and Mrs. R, Norman, Ed Fletcher of Burke.
