Funeral Services Wednesday After a short illness of heart trouble, with which he was first afflicted one day last week, Charles L. Ward, former Mayor and prominent citizen of Crisfield, died at his home in this city last Monday morning. Mayor Ward was 61 years of age. Born in the Daughertytown section of Crisfield, the son of the late Augustus Ward, the former mayor became actively identified with the business and civic life of the community in his Charles L. Ward youth, and continued that interest until the day of his death. At an early age he opened a grocery and provision store on Maryland Avenue, this city, and conducted the mercantile business successfully for several years. He then became associated with the wholesale firm of Quigley & Mullen of Wilmington, Del., and as a representative of this firm he traveled the Del-Mar-Va Eastern Shore peninsula. Subsequently, he became associated with the well-known Baltimore wholesale firm of Snow, Knox & Co., as their Eastern Shore representative. Some years later he purchased the interest of Mr. Knox in the business, the firm name then being changed to Snow, Ward & Co. Although a partner in the business, Mr. Ward continued to cover his old territory on the Eastern shore for several years, until both he and Mr. Snow retired from active business in 1921. During his many years as a salesman on the road and later as member of the well-known Baltimore firm, Mayor Ward established an acquaintanceship which embraced thousands of people in all parts of the Shore and State, and he enjoyed a most successful business career. He was generally recognized as a man of considerable business acumen and executive ability, and built for himself a position of prominence and prestige in the business world. Although his interest were largely centered in Baltimore during the later years of his active business career, Mayor Ward continued to make his home in Crisfield at all times, building and occupying a handsome residence on upper Main Street, where he passed away on Monday. Following a lot of municipal litigation in 1921, during which the city government of Crisfield became embarrassed and unable to meet its obligations, the entire municipal board resigned from office, and a citizens committee drafted Mr. Ward to act as Mayor. At the same time three well-known business men — former Mayor L. C. Quinn, Sr., former Councilman Benj. F. Gibson, and H. H. Matthews — were drafted to the posts in the City Council. Between Mayor Ward and the members of the City Council an intimate friendship had existed for many years, and the City Government soon became a happy family of business leaders, all working in unity and close co-operation to get the municipal affairs of the community back on a staple footing. Within less than a year after Mayor Ward's administration assumed office, the litigation was all settled in an amicable manner, the city's obligations had been met and its credit restored, and the municipal affairs were functioning in a normal and highly satisfactory way. At the following biennial election, Mayor Ward and the members of his Council were re-elected without opposition. During that term, Councilman H. H. Matthews resigned to accept the position of City Treasurer and Edward R. Dize was appointed to fill the vacancy in the City Council. (page torn) Mayor Ward was a lifelong member of Immanuel M. E. Church, and was a member of the Official Board for many years. In politics he was a Republican, and occupied a position of prominence in the counsels of his party. On numerous occasions he was prominently mentioned for the nomination for State Senate, State Comptroller and Congress, but was never a candidate for public office other than as a member of the Municipal Government of his home community. And it was not with any thought of political honors, but in the belief that he could render his community a real service in a time of distress, that he consented to accept the Mayoralty and to continue in that position for more than five years. In the death of Mayor Ward, Crisfield has lost a valuable citizen. He was a business man of high character, splendid judgment and ability, public-spirited and ready at all times to encourage community welfare; and he possessed many manly qualities which endeared him to those who knew him best, and which won for him the high esteem of the general public. He was a polished, courtly gentleman at all times, and his passing removed from the community circles one whom the town could ill afford to lose. In his early manhood, Mayor Ward was married to Miss Minnie Adams, a daughter of the late John Adams by whom he is survived. He is also survived by one daughter, Mrs. Roscoe E. Jordan of Berkeley, California, and one son, C. Loomis Ward, a student at Harvard University. Two sisters and four brothers also mourn his loss, as follows: Mrs. Eunice Evans and Mrs. Irene Atkinson, and Messrs. Augustus Ward, Lorenzo D. Ward and Thomas Ward of Crisfield, and Robert Ward of New York City. The pall-bearers were: W. H. Bradshaw, B. F. Gibson, H. H. Matthews, Frank P. Landon, Ernest W. Mims, and W. Frank Daugherty. A baptism record for Charles Loomis Ward gives his birth as 29 Jun 1869, son of Augustus and Mary W. Ward. He was baptized at Asbury M. E. Church on 14 Jul 1872. His death certificate gives 8 Jun 1868. His wife, Mrs. C. L. Ward was the informant.
