Lunsford, well known and prominent business man of Monterey, Va., died at the Blue Ridge Sanatorium on Jan. 23rd, at which institution he had been a patient since last August, and while his condition was known to be critical, yet his death was quite a shock to his friends here. Born Dec. 8, 1876, he was more than 59 years of age at the time of his passing. His early years were spent near Hightown, Va., his father the late Morgan Lunsford, died in early life, leaving him and one sister, now Mrs. Maude Keister of Rolla, Va., who were cared for in their early years by their grandmother, Mrs. William. Swadley and aunt, Mrs. Bettie Kincaid. When a young man he entered the mercantile business of G. W. Hevener & Co. at Hightown, Va., where he spent a number of years. Going from this apprenticeship, he formed the mercantile business of Lunsford & Gum at Bartow, West Va., then a growing business center. In this venture they were very successful. At the organization of the Citizens Bank here, he was selected as their first cashier & in which position he served with honor. Later he associated himself with the J.J. Stoutenberger Railroad Project making a survey from Hot Springs, Va. to Cumberland, Md. This project failed to materialize & he entered the automobile business, then in its infancy and opened the first Public garage in the town of Monterey in the Masonic building on West Main street, as the automobile industry grew, he and the late Tom H. Slaven formed a partnership and built the brick garage on the old Carver lot opposite the post office & which stands today as a memorial to the progressive minds of these two men. They became owners of the Monterey Light Plant, which they developed. At the death of Mr. Slaven, Mr. Lunsford became the sole owner, later selling to The Monongahela System. He was married in the year 1904 to Miss Abbie Fleisher who died April 31, 1931. To this union two children were born and who survive, Charles W Lunsford, in charge of the Monongahela System at Franklin, W. Va., and Miss Margaret Lunsford of Monterey, Va., also three half-brothers, Rosser, Jacob and Warren Hupman of Patna, Va. During the years of his residence here he was always public spirited. Interested in and active in the affairs looking to the development of the town, serving a number of years as member of the Town Council. He was prominent in the prominent in the Masonic Fraternity, both local and state and this organization was in charge of the services at the grave and attended the church service in a body. Interment in the Monterey Cemetery.
