Description	:	CHARLES NEUMANN, the tenth child of William Gottlieb Neumann, was born in Langenlonsheim, Germany, February 6, 1843. He came with his family to America in 1857, and was raised on a farm near Cambridge, Illinois. As a boy he enjoyed outdoor work and experience privations and uncertainty of crops. Read More	CHARLES NEUMANN, the tenth child of William Gottlieb Neumann, was born in Langenlonsheim, Germany, February 6, 1843. He came with his family to America in 1857, and was raised on a farm near Cambridge, Illinois. As a boy he enjoyed outdoor work and experience privations and uncertainty of crops. He served in the Civil War for more than three years, in the 7th Illinois Cavalry. After the war was over he married Mary Metzner, February 8, 1864, and 7 children were born to them in Illinois and one son Clarence was born in Sutton, Nebraska While the children were young one outstanding incident is handed down in the family. He bought for his wife a sewing machine, a rarity in those days. His wife was a good cook and was immaculate in her housekeeping. But, she had no talent for sewing, what-so-ever. With a family of eight children it proved to be a handicap. It seems her husband "took over". He must have had a talent for tailoring. Even the neighbors came in for advice on garment making. He often told his daughter-in-law that the happiest years of his life were spent on the farm in Livingston Co., Illinois, while the children were small. In 1879, the family traveled westward in a covered wagon to find a new home. Charles' brother Fred, had already settled in Kansas and Charles thought that Kansas would be their destination. It happened that one horse became lame when they reached Sutton, Nebraska. They camped in a Park for three weeks, and then decided to remain in Sutton. Meanwhile word came to them that Kansas was experiencing a drought and settlers were moving away. Charles Neumann's first employment was with an implement firm. Later he went into business as a well driller, which occupation he followed the rest of his life. He always said it was the providence of God that led him to locate in Sutton, Nebraska. After the death of his wife, he retired and lived with his son Clarence and his daughter-in-law Bernice Neuman. This tribute was given by Bernice Neuman. "I have never known a more consecrated Christian man, than he. He was a member of the Methodist Church, and had the older type of faith. A truly born again believer. Living with us for six years, I loved him like a father." One fact in the family which is interesting, shows that the well business, originally started in a small way by Charles Neumann in the early 1880's is still carried on by his two great grandsons and son-in-law. Charles Neumann made bored wells. When he retired his son Clarence continued the business. Clarence used a drilling machine and also installed wind mills, later adding plumbing and heating equipment to his line. In 1914 his nephew, Art Kessler, became a partner. They built a new building and added electrical equipment and services. That continued until Clarence's health failed. Art Kessler continued the business until he retired in 1958. Charles Neumann died in 1926 and his wife Mary Metzner Neumann in 1920. Both are buried in Sutton, Nebraska. WILLIAM GOTTLIEB NEUMANN GENEALOGY 1790-1958 Chas Neumann Chas. Neumann was born at Langenlonsheim, Germany, Febr. 6, 1843 and passed away at Sutton, Nebraska on March 20, 1926, aged 83 years, 1 month and 14 days. At the age of 14 he came to America with his parents, and resided in Illinois until 1879. He enrolled as a bugler on May 17, 1864 at Springfield, Ill., with the Volunteer Cavalry of Co. L. 7th Regiment and was honorably discharged at Nashville, Tenn., the Civil War being over on Nov. 4, 1865. He was untied in marriage to Mary Metzner, Febr. 6, 1864 in Henry county, Illinois. To this union eight children were born all of whom are living: Five sons, August, Edward, George, Oscar and Clarence; three daughters, Mrs. Christian Rath, Mrs. Chas. Copley and Mrs. Lewis F. Esch. He also leaves twenty-one grandchildren, three step-grand children, seven great grandchildren and three brothers. In the year 1879 he came with his family to Sutton, Nebraska, where he has since resided. His wife preceded him in death on April 20, 1920. In the year 1882 he united with the Methodist Episcopal church of Sutton, under the pastorate of Rev. N. A. Martin. He remained a faithful member to the end of life. Mr. Neumann was a man of high character and a good citizen. He was held in high esteem by everyone. Funeral services were held from the home on Monday afternoon by Rev. H. W. Cox. He had made complete arrangements for his own funeral. The text he had selected was 1 Thes. 4:13. He had also requested music by a male quartet. His requests were all complied with. The home was crowded and a number had gathered in the yard to pay their respects to a tried neighbor and a true friend. ------------obituary
