DeLong b. 1902. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Charles Richard deLong 1947 Bridgewater Bulletin Relatives and friends were saddened to hear of the passing of Mr. C.R. deLong on June 4, 1947, at the Dawson Memorial Hospital, Bridgewater, where he had been a patient, after sustaining a broken hip in a fall on May 2nd. Mr. deLong was born 83 years ago at Barss Corners, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Albert de Long. In 1887, he married Miss Alice Lantz, who predeceased him on December 18, 1940. For the majority of his married life he lived on "The David Lantz Farm" in Farmington. Of exceptionally fine character, he was highly regarded by everyone he knew. He particularly loved children and young people and was the faithful Superintendent of the Baptist Sunday School for over 50 years, an office from which he resigned in 1945, being Honourary Superintendent up until his death. He was devoted to all the work which went on in the church and was deacon for approximately 45 years, the last 20 of which he served as senior deacon. For 27 years he filled the position of insurance agent for Kings Mutual Insurance and was well known along the South Shore and Annapolis Valley. Surviving is one daughter, Mrs. Minnie Oyler, at home; two sons, Earl in California and David in Delaware, Ohio; also two sisters, Nellie, Mrs. Orde of Wakefield, Massachusetts; and Jedidah, Mrs. Wallace Lantz, Barss Corners, as well as nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Two sons predeceased him - Emery on October 14, 1923 and Vernon on June 4, 1943. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. H.S. Hartlin from the Barss Corners Baptist Church on Saturday, June 7, and were largely attended by relatives and friends from surrounding communities, Halifax, Lawrencetown, Berwick, Mahone Bay, Bridgewater, Marriott's Cove, Middleton, and Kempt. Mr. Hartlin based his eulogy on the favourite text of Mr. deLong's, namely. John 3:16 and the hymns, "Saved By Grace," "Jesus Saves," and "When The Roll is Called Up Yonder" were personally chosen by the deceased before his death. The pall-bearers were his nephews, Herman and Ralph deLong and his grandsons, Winfield and Reginald deLong. With thanks to Rosemary Rafuse.
