Trimble, prominent churchman, businessman, and a lifelong resident of Highland county, died Sunday July 24, at 5:15 p.m. at his home on South Spruce street, death being due to the infirmities of age and following an extended illness. He was a son of the late Henry I. Trimble and Mrs. Lucinda McCoy Trimble, and was born May 12, 1860 at the old Trimble homestead on Strait Creek. He was the eldest of a large family of children, all of whom preceded him in death except one sister, Mrs. E. W. Armstrong of Rolla, Va., and Henry I. Trimble of Elkins, West Virginia. By a strange coincidence, another sister, Mrs. L. S. Dickenson, who was born on the same date nine years later, died Friday, and funeral services were being held for her at he time of Mr. Trimble’s death. They had celebrated together their birthday anniversaries on May 14 in the home of Mrs. Armstrong. On June 24, 1896, Mr. Trimble was married to Miss Mary Bertie Lunsford, daughter of the late Joshua and Lavina Hevener Lunsford, who survives, as do two sons and two daughters: Professor Ralph M. Trimble, Chapel Hill, N. C., Charles W. Trimble Jr., who holds a position in Harrisonburg; Mrs. George N. Wilson Jr. of Charleston, West Va., and Miss Mildred Trimble, at home. For more than half a century Mr. Trimble had been connected with varied business enterprises of the community. Coming to Monterey as a young man, by thrift and energy, he soon took a commanding place in the business world. Holding farming and grazing lands on Strait Creek, he engaged in the mercantile business with L. S. Dickenson under the firm name of Dickenson & Trimble. Later he was the senior member of the firm of Trimble & Lunsford, selling his interests in his business to J. Lunsford & Sons in 1903. Since that time he has conducted a mercantile business under his own name and in later years under the name of the Spruce Cash Store. Mr. Trimble served his town as mayor for one term a number of years ago. He was an active member of the Monterey Methodist church and for many years the teacher of the men’s Bible class, and the first organized class in the Monterey church school, the “Helping Hand” class, in which he took a great interest. He had served his church in many capacities; for a number of years he was a member of the choir; he was a member of the board of stewards, of which he was chairman a long time; he was a member of the board of trustees of the church property. Funeral services were held at the Monterey Methodist church Tuesday evening at 2:30 o’clock, conducted by his pastor, the Rev. J. H. Light, assisted by the Rev. A. E. Johnson of the Presbyterian church. Interment was in the family plot in the Monterey cemetery. Highland Recorder June 26, 1896 A Home Wedding. On last Wednesday morning at half past ten o'clock a select party of friends assembled at the residence of Mr. Joshua Lunsford, near Hightown, to witness the marriage of his daughter, Miss Bertie, to Mr. Charles W. Trimble, of Monterey, which was solemnized Rev. W. H. Woolf. The wedding march was well rendered by Miss Bessie Jones, of Doe Hill, the attendants were James Sipe and Miss Cora Lunsford, R. B. Slaven and Miss Kate Whitelaw, and Howard Armstrong and Miss Marie Jones. The ladies were tastefully attired in white, and presented an attractive group. Immediately after the ceremony the company repaired to the dining room and partook of refreshments which were much enjoyed, after which the bride and groom started on a tour, which will embrace Washington and other points of interest in the north. Miss Bertie's many friends were loathe to see her leave the neighborhood of Hightown. She belongs to the class of ladies who by their ladylike bearing win the esteem of all, old and young. Mr. Trimble can be congratulated on securing such a lady for his companion across life's sea. Mr. and Mrs. Trimble have the best wishes of their many friends. Trimble, while feeding his horses on last Wednesday morning, was pushed violently against the stable by one of them, breaking his collarbone, and bruising his shoulder severely.
