Barger & Son Construction Co., Inc. and a leader in the business community here, died at his home Wednesday night after a long illness. Born in Rockbridge County on July 20, 1922, he was the son of the late Charles W. Barger and Lillian Withrow Barger. Upon graduation at Lexington High School in 1940, he entered Virginia Polytechnic Institute and received the bachelor of science degree in architectural engineering in 1944. He then entered business with his father who was a general contractor and quarry operator. Following the death of his father in 1953, he took over the management of the business, which he expanded to include a readymix concrete plant and at one time, a truck agency, in addition to the continued successful operation of the construction and quarrying business. Under the elder Mr. Barger the firm constructed the new quadrangle of the VMI barracks. The construction of Mallory Hall was completed by the company after the death of C. W. Barger Sr. Other major VMI projects the firm has constructed are Nichols Hall Annex, Alumni Memorial Stadium and the top floors of Scott Shipp Hall Annex. At Washington and Lee, the Barger firm built the student center and duPont Hall. In recent years the company has concentrated on highway work, heavy excavation and concrete work. For the past two years it has been engaged in the site preparation, utility installation and road work for the new Washington and Lee law school. Other work at W&L has included construction of the new tennis courts, extension of alumni field and work on the new heating and cooling plant. The firm was extensively engaged in highway repair work in the county following the disastrous Camille flood. One of its most recent projects was the connecting link between Thorn Hill Road and the bypass. In spite of failing health, Mr. Barger continued to maintain an active hand in the management of the company, working closely with M. R. Beebe, vice president. Mr. Barger served in 1972 as president, and had also been vice president and secretary-treasurer of the Virginia Road Builders Association, a non-profit organization which represents the highway construction industry. He was also chairman of the Rockbridge County planning commission from March 1966 until October 1970. He served as deacon and was chairman of the board of deacons for the Lexington Presbyterian Church. Elected in January 1955 to the board of directors of the Rockbridge National Bank, now the United Virginia Bank-Rockbridge, he was named vice president in January 1962. He became vice chairman of the board in February 1967 and served in this capacity until January 1973, when he resigned for health reasons. He remained on the board until his death. In addition, he served as president for both the Lexington Kiwanis Club and the Lexington Hunt Club. He was also a former secretary of the Architectural Alumni Association of Virginia Tech and a member Amertcan Legion. He was married to the former Beatrice E. Jones of Salem. Surviving him in addition to his wife are two daughters, Mrs. Curtis H. Straub Jr. of Virginia Beach and Miss B. Gail Barger of Lexington; a son, Charles W. Barger III of Lexington, and a sister, Mrs. E. J. Roxbury of McLean. Dr. James Sprunt conducted the funeral service at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Cemetery, Saturday at 11 a.m. [Lexington Gazette, July 1974]
