Charlotte was born September 3, 1923, in Big Timber to Leonard J. and Myrtle McInerney Esp. She grew up on Deer Creek along with a sister, Betty, and two brothers, Ray and Jim. She attended both grade school and parochial school at District #17 Deer Creek. Charlotte graduated in 1940 from high school and attended Montana State University in Bozeman prior and post WWII. She was baptized and confirmed into the Big Timber Lutheran Church and graduated from Western Union School at Santa Cruz, California. She was a telegrapher at busy offices in Marysville, California and the U.S. Naval Base at Farragut, Idaho. While in college she was an assistant to campus psychologist, Dr. L. O. Brockman, giving pre-adoptive and student tests. She was also employed at Elsie Tinsley's Beauty Shop on Main Street. During World War II she enlisted at Butte into the U. S. Navy along with her brother, Ray Esp, and her cousin, Bill Esp. After boot training at Hunter College in New York City, she took advanced training at Georgia State College in Milledgeville, Georgia. She served as a technician on "B" watch in the naval Communications Headquarters in Cleveland, Ohio, where it had relocated from Washington D. C. in case of bombing. She was sworn into the Navy in July 1944. She served from November 1944 to April 1946. In 1946 she returned to college and was married five years to Bob Liquin. In Great Falls she was a sales lady at the Bon Marche-Paris of Montana. She then became manager of the Malmstom Air Force Base Western Union Office. She married James M. Gorder and during their many moves, she was employed at Broadway Court in Witchita, Kansas; sales lady at the Griffith Department Store in Grand Forks, North Dakota; and for J. C. Penny in Idaho Falls, Idaho. She and James were married eight years. She relocated to Big Timber and married Lloyd Ronning, March 2, 1961, at the Billings Congregational Church. They were married for 33 years and lived in Big Timber where Lloyd was in the home building and masonry business. She was among the last group who challenged the Montana State Board to become a licensed practical nurse. She worked at the Pioneer Nursing Home in Big Timber from 1966 through 1974. Hobbies enjoyed were compiling family-community histories known as "My Savings Account". Incorporated into it were the studies of world religion and political law. She enjoyed oil painting, music, needlepoint, books and of course designing Barbie fashion that she sewed and sold from her home and bazaars. She is preceded in death by her husband Lloyd, brother Ray, sister Betty, and great grandson, Trent Schreiber. Charlotte is survived by a brother Jim (Shirley) Esp of Big Timber; sister-in-law Rita Esp of Big Timber; one son Richard (Kathy) Liquin of Corona, California; and a daughter, Shannon (Jack) Plaggemeyer of Big Timber; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She will be missed by many nieces, nephews, and friends. Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, December 8 at Stenberg Funeral Home. Memorials in Charlotte's name may be made to the Crazy Mountain Museum, PO Box 83, Big Timber, MT 59011 or to any veterans organization.
