From the Bladen Enterprise A terrible explosion of Kerosene occurred at the home of Fritz Piel Thursday afternoon which resulted in the death of Lottie, a sixteen year old daughter, and another daughter about four years of age, and it is thought the mother will die. Mrs. Piel was sick and lying on a bed, and the daughter went to start the fire in the kitchen stove with kerosene. The flames started up and ignited the oil in the can, which instantly exploded, enveloping everything in the house in a mass of flame. It is thought that Mrs. Piel caught the baby in her arms and tried to get out the door, but was too weak and dropped the child and made her way out of doors and screamed. Mr. Wallace, who lives across the street, heard her and ran over. He opened the door and was met by a volume of flame which he could not go through. Going around the house he heard the little child screaming for it mamma in terrible agony, and breaking in the window he hastily seized a quilt off the bed and threw it over his head, searching till he found both girls and managed to get them out of the window. Other neighbors came and the two girls, with every vestige of clothing burned from them and their bodies burned beyond recognition, were carried to Mr. Wallace’s home, where they died about six o’clock, only a few minutes apart. The mother was carried to the home of Mr. Collette, where she is lying at the point of death. She was in poor health, and the nervous strain, together with the burns, it is thought, will be more than she can stand.
