STOKES PASSED AWAY FARLEY ~ Funeral Was Held on Last Tuesday at 2 O’clock In Farley ~ Farley, Ia.-Death claimed Mrs. James Stokes at her home near Farley Thursday morning, April 17, 1934 at 4 o’clock after a short illness. She had been taken ill only one day before her death and everything that medical science and loving hands could do proved to no avail. The hands of death touched her at 4 o’clock and her spirit was borne across the great divide that separates us from immortality.She was born in Somersetshire, England on July 12, 1863. When a young girl she came to this country and lived in Cherokee, Ia. She was married Feb. 16, 1888 and went to housekeeping on a farm near Farley and has resided there since. Eight children were born to them, two children preceded her in death. Besides her husband, she is survived by the following three daughters and three sons, Mrs. John Wall of Farley; Mrs. Frank Cooksley of Earlville; Mrs. George King of Epworth; William, Harold and Henry Stokes of Farley; two sister and three brothers, Mrs. Anna Small, Sioux City; Mrs. Elizabeth Boal of Dubuque; Charles Parrott of London, England; James Parrott of Sioux City; Henry Parrott of Hartford, S. Dakota; also 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church of Farley and took and active part in the community.Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock from her home near Farley to the Community Church. Rev. J. E. Flockheart, of Dubuque officiated at the church and grave service. Burial was made in Fairview Cemetery. The casket was borne by Edward, Arnold, John Wall Jr., William and Francis Cooksley all grandsons and Walter Boal, a nephew. The death of Mrs. Stokes has called forth expressions of sorrow from every hand and all who knew her. She was a devoted wife and mother and her thought were centered in her home where she will be sadly missed heartfelt sympathy is extended to those left to mourn her loss.Those who attended the funeral of Mrs. Stokes from a distance was Mrs. Anna Small of Sioux City; Mrs. Mary Small of Washta, Ia.; Mrs. James Parrott of Sioux City; Mrs. Martha Parrott of Washta, Ia.; Mrs. Clifford Small of Cherokee; Mr. and Mrs. Tony Muller of Fort Dodge; Mr. Henry and John Parrott of Hartford, S. Dakota; Mr. and Mrs. Earl Kremer of Zwingle; and Mrs. Elizabeth Boal and daughter Hazel, of Dubuque.Epworth Historical Society ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ James Stokes, Jr., born March 15, 1860 in Whitewater Township, he married Charlotte Parrott, she was born July 12, 1863. She emigrated from England and worked as a housekeeper. They farmed south of Farley in an area known as Cooperharbor. Sometimes referred to as the “Sand Desert” because of the sandy soil. He sold wood that he secured clearing the land for farming. James and Charlotte had eight children. Edward and James died very young; other children were, Mary Wall, Sophia Cooksley, William, Harold, Lily King and Henry.
