He began to help his father at the barber shop by shining... Read More	DUDLEY, CHESTER EUGENE—Chester Eugene Dudley was born to Dorsey Dudley and Lucy Beavers Dudley on July 8, 1909, in Oak. He passed away on Nov. 25, 1999, at the Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva at the age of 90 years, 4 months and 17 days. He was one of three children in the family. Chet’s father was a barber and the family moved to Geneva in 1914. It was here that Chet began school. In 1919 the family moved to Holyoke, Colo. He began to help his father at the barber shop by shining shoes, running “Saturday night bath” for farmers who came to town. A drought in eastern Colorado resulted in very difficult times, and the family returned to Nebraska, locating in Stromsburg. Chet attended seventh and eighth grade in Stromsburg. It was in Stromsburg where he began in earnest his lifelong love of hunting and fishing. He trapped and fished the Blue River near town. His mother’s parents had moved to Geneva around 1920, and in 1923, Chet moved to Geneva to live with them and start high school. His parents and sister, Phyllis, followed one year later when his father bought a small barber shop in Geneva. He graduated from Geneva High School in 1927 and on Dec. 26, 1929, was married to Gertrude Bumgarner of Geneva. Two sons were born to them, John and Richard. Chet worked as a general clerk at the Union Grocery Store in Geneva from 1925 until 1927. He then worked as a teller from 1927 until 1936, at the Geneva State Bank. Later he served as the County Assistant Agent from 1936 until 1944, and then was the General Manager for A. Koehler Company from 1944 until his retirement in 1973. He was active in the community of Geneva, serving on the fire department for many years. He was a member of the Geneva Odd Fellow Lodge for 71 years, Geneva Congregational United Church of Christ for 75 years and York Elk’s Lodge No. 1024 for 51 years. He took a very active interest in the Fillmore County Hospital serving on the board for 21 years. Leisure hours were spent hunting and fishing, and he thoroughly enjoyed going to the “Casino”, Nelson Oil Company to play pitch on Saturday mornings with Wincel and following Wincel’s death, Dick and whoever showed up. He and Gertrude also played golf regularly and spent many fond times with Helen and Vince Lynn, Louise and Charles Picard, Mildred and Paul Farmer, John and Chaddie Brooke, Bob and Maxine Nichols, Ben and Virginia Koehler, George and Evalyn Koehler, Larry and Elizabeth Doud, Bernard and Iola Weiss, Helen and Fred Biba, Carl and Mildred Schneider, Doc and Mary Adams, Iris and LeGrand Shaw, Marion Calder and Ruben and Adeline Voigtlander. He enjoyed hunting with Rube as well as Jack Eller, Red Phelps and Dwight Edwards in those old days. That circle of friends expanded to those who would show up for a golf game or pitch game in his retirement years and the list is long. In the fifties, Chet and five other hunters bought “the pond.” That acreage of water and weeds south and west of Geneva, a preserve for wildlife, brought as much enjoyment to him as any one thing he did. It was where he taught his sons to hunt, and where the whole family fished and the grandsons have now begun to learn to hunt. He loved the pond. It was the one thing on which he could really focus and which he loved to talk about when he was so ill and hospitalized in recent months. The pond meant family, and for Chet, family was everything. His story will go on for many more decades through memories his family has of him and the stories they tell. He was preceded in death by a baby brother, who died shortly after birth, and by his parents, Dorsey and Lucy Dudley. He is survived by wife, Gertrude; sons, Richard and wife, Lillian, and John and wife, Diane; sister, Phyllis Heath; and by eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Memorial services were held at 10:30 a.m., Nov. 30, 1999, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, with Rev. Wanda W. Bennett officiating. Nancy Cradduck accompanied Susan Rickert who sang “The Lord’s Prayer” and the congregational singing of “Hymn of Promise.” Private graveside services were at the Geneva Public Cemetery.
