Description	:	Chris Mumford, 31, a Chester native and 1980 graduate of CHG, was killed in a car-truck accident at Fayetteville, NC last Tuesday, April 27th. The son of Bill and Mary Mumford, Chester, Chris was serving with the 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg, NC. He has just finished a 29-hour duty shift including a surprise paratroop jumping exercise and was returning to his living quarters when the car he was driving collided nearly head-on with an Army 2 1/2-ton truck. Read More	Chris Mumford, 31, a Chester native and 1980 graduate of CHG, was killed in a car-truck accident at Fayetteville, NC last Tuesday, April 27th. The son of Bill and Mary Mumford, Chester, Chris was serving with the 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg, NC. He has just finished a 29-hour duty shift including a surprise paratroop jumping exercise and was returning to his living quarters when the car he was driving collided nearly head-on with an Army 2 1/2-ton truck. The accident occurred just a quarter mile from his home. Chris survived only a few hours following the crash. Services with full military honors were held at the Chester United Methodist Church Monday afternoon, May 3rd. The military tribute included a bag pipe solo outside the church preceding, during the service, and at the cemetery. A 21-gun salute and the traditional folding of the U.S. flag and presentation to the family were included in the service. An Army Honor Guard from Ft. Riley, KS performed the military rite of the service. CW2 Michael J. Ivosevic was the official military escort from Ft. Bragg accompanying Chris' coffin from the base until burial. A full obituary appears elsewhere in this paper. ========================== Christopher Eugene Mumford, one of three children of William E. Mumford and Mary E. (Berry) Mumford was born in Stephenville, Texas, on February 11, 1962. Chris passed from this life at Fayetteville, North Carolina on April 27, 1993 at the age of 31 years, 2 months and 16 days. Chris was baptized, then confirmed in April of 1974 at the United Methodist Church in Chester, Nebraska by Pastor Norman Crounse. He attended the Chester-Hubbell Schools until graduating in June of 1980 and moving on to Kearney State and Peru State Colleges. He then in June of 1985 enlisted into the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. Later Chris became a paratrooper and was stationed at Fort Bragg, North Caroline (sic) where he was serving with the 82nd Airborne Division, America's Guard of Honor at the time of his death. On January 16, 1991 he was united in marriage to Evette Y. Smith at Minden, Nebraska. Throughout his life Chris lived in Stephenville, Texas, Chester, Kearney and Peru, Nebraska, Ft. Hood, Texas, Illesheim, West Germany, Spring Lake, North Carolina and Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He was a member of the UMYF, C-Club and AUSA. Christopher is survived by his wife Evette of Fort Bragg; his parents William and Mary of Chester; grandparents Chris and Lois Mumford of Hebron; two brothers, Tony and wife Cindy of Crete, Illinois and Bruce and wife Rachelle of Kirchgoens, Germany, along with one niece, Jessica Mumford and one nephews Ross Mumford both of Crete, IL. Services with military rites were held on May 3, 1993 at 2 p.m. from the United Methodist Church in Chester, Nebraska, with Pastor Randall Dilts officiating. Music was provided by Irene Long and Cindy Tipton who sang "Hymn Of Praise" and "Spirit Song" with Pauline Frye as accompanist. Pallbearers were the Army Honor Guard of Fort Riley, Kansas with SFC Jeff Oliver of the 82 Airborne Division. The Official Military Escort from Fort Bragg was CW2 Michael J. Ivosevic. Honorary pallbearers were Eric Miller, Michael Watt, Jeff Tucker, Jim Weaver, Curtis Harry, Tony Krause, Bob Baldridge, Dallen George, Dan Benz, Mike Anderson, Brent Moody and Kevin Gorka. Interment with Military Rites were held from the Chester city Cemetery at Chester, NE. A memorial has been established and should be directed to the family.
