Visitation will be 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., Friday, October 12, at Walter Huebner & Sons Funeral Home in Schleswig. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 13, at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, with the Rev. Jim Schatz officiating. Clara Catharina Caroline Ehler was born July 12, 1895, on the family farm in Grant Township, Ida County, the daughter of Joachim and Emma Dorathea (Suckstorf) Ehler. She was baptized on August 25, 1895, at Grant Church. In November 1899, she moved with her parents to the newly founded town of Schleswig. In 1910, she received instruction and was Confirmed at Friedens Evangelical Church, now the United Church of Christ, by Rev. Wetzler. She was graduated from Schleswig High School in 1912. She married Emil Erich Maas on December 29, 1915, at Friedens Church in Schleswig. Together they farmed north of Schleswig. Emil preceded her in death on September 26, 1936. She continued to farm until 1956, when she began working as a Certified Psychiatric Aide at the Mental Health Institute in Cherokee, until she retired in October 1968. Following retirement, she lived for a year in Irwin, then moved to Charter Oak, where she lived for five years. She became ill, was in a hospital for three month, then became a resident of Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, where she remained for 13 years. She was a member of the United Church of Christ. She led a full and useful life. She was very fond of her grandchildren. Surviving are one daughter, Dorothy (Harwin) Jess; one son, Harris (LaDonna) Maas, both of Schleswig; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one granddaughter, two sisters, one in infancy and Edna Johns and two brothers, Heinrich and Edward Ehler. Schleswig Leader, Oct 18, 1990
