Several years ago he suffered a severe attack of the flu and his health has been failing ever since. Last fall the doctors advised a change of climate, so he spent the winter of 1927 in Colorado, which seemed to benefit him, but after his return home he began to fall ill again. He did have an attack of pleurisy for a few days, but recovered and was able to attend to some of his business matters. On Sunday, he became ill and was confined to his bed with pneumonia. On Tuesday, an operation was deemed necessary, but his condition weakened him and he passed at his home. Johannes Ehler was born September 27, 1867, in Bojendorf, Island of Fehmarn, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, the son of Matthaeus and Caroline (Ehler) Ehler. He received his education in the public schools of Germany. Following the death of his mother, his father and three brothers immigrated to the United States in 1883, and settled in Jackson County, Iowa, where he worked for two years and then moved to Ida County. After three years working there, he moved to Crawford County where he worked another two years. He had acquired the necessary money to buy eighty acres of land, where he engaged in general farming and stock raising, which has now grown to 2,100 acres of farm land. He married Emma Dorathea Suckstorf on September 27, 1889, at the Grant Township Lutheran Church and to this union five children were born. He used the name John during his lifetime. After spending the first two years of their married life on the old Suckstorf farm, they moved to Ida County, where they farmed for eight years. When the town of Schleswig was founded and the Chicago & North-Western railroad was built through Schleswig, John started in the buying and selling of stock. In the spring of 1901, he retired from farming and they moved to Schleswig. During the 27 years he lived there, he was engaged in the live stock and real estate business, who handled more live stock than any other buyer in the area. He has served as director of the Farmers State Bank since the start of the business. Mr. and Mrs. Ehler, along with Dora's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Suckstorf, sailed to their homeland of Fehmarn, Germany, in 1907 for a four month visit with many family members. In 1915, the couple toured the West. The life of John Ehler is an admirable example of success attained by one who started empty-handed and gained a position of ease and comfort through his indomitable energy and resourcefulness. Surviving are his wife, Dora; two daughters, Clara (Emil) Maas and Edna (Lawrence) Johns, both of Schleswig; one son, Edward (Leona) Ehler of Schleswig; two grandchildren, Dorothy Maas and Harris Maas; three brothers, Julius (Dora) Ehler of Schleswig and Ludwig (Agnes) Ehler and Richard (Dora) Ehler, both of Ida Grove; and one sister, Mathilda Scheel of Germany. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter and one son, Louie Ehler.
