Edward Richard Lorenz Ehler was born October 3, 1899, in Crawford County, the son of John and Dora (Suckstorf) Ehler. He was baptized April 16, 1916, and was confirmed in Friedens Church by Rev. Wetzler. He graduated from Schleswig High School in 1916. He married Leona Emma Mary Hamann on February 19, 1929, in Storm Lake. He became associated with his father in business as a stock buyer for many years and also worked for different business firms. He entered the Livestock order business with Bart Bielenberg and the firm became Bielenberg and Ehler. He lived his entire life in the Schleswig community. He was a member of the Business Men's club and was a catcher on the Schleswig baseball team. He enjoyed baseball and auto races. About sixteen months ago it was found necessary for him to submit to an operation from which he recovered and it was hoped that he was permanently cured. About six months ago a serious nerve condition resulted from the operation with the exception of a few weeks his condition constantly grew worse from that time on and he suffered a great deal of pain. He had hoped by submitting to the operation on May 20, to sever the nerves, he would be relieved from his suffering, however he passed away fourteen hours later. Surviving are his wife, Leona; one son, Edward (Rheta) Ehler; two sisters, Clara Maas and Edna (Lawrence) Johns, both of Schleswig; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister in infancy, one brother, Heinrich Ehler and one brother-in-law, Emil Maas. Schleswig Leader, May 25, 1950
