JOHN HART PASSES AWAY AT HER HOME IN THIS CITY MONDAY EVENING, FUNERAL TODAY Sudden indeed was the passing of Mrs. John Hart at her home in this city Monday evening, September 1, 1919. Though she has been in failing health for a couple of years with troubles due to old age, it was not thought that the end was as near. Upon complaint that she was not feeling as well as usual, her physician was called and also her daughter, Mrs. Alfred Skallberg. She was sitting or rather reclining on the couch, her daughter sitting beside her, who wanted her to go to bed, but the mother said, "No, I will just rest here," and in a few minutes, without a struggle, she passed away. Miss Clara Carlson was born in Sweden, February 2, 1842 and at the time of her death was 77 years, 6 months, and 30 days old. She was united in marriage, December 23, 1859 to John Hart. To this union eleven children were born, nine of whom are living, one daughter and one son have gone before. Those living are Alfred, Mrs. Albert Skallberg, Mrs. Alfred Engster, Joseph, of near Essex, Iowa, Oscar of near Hepburn, Otto of California, Mrs. Ida Errickson of Wakefield, Nebraska, and Mrs. Chas. Abraham of near Stanton and Tennie who is at home. Mr. and Mrs. Hart came to America in 1868, settling first in Illinois, where they lived for but a short time, removing to Page County, Iowa, where they resided on a farm east of Essex until seventeen years ago, they retired from the heavy cares of the farm and came to town to live. When they came to Iowa there was no railroad between Red Oak and Nebraska City. In fact Essex was not laid out at that time. Mr. Hart departed this life April 10, 1914, since which time Mrs. Hart and her daughter Tenie have been living in the residence where Mrs. Hart passed away. The funeral is being held this afternoon at the family home at 2 and at the Swedish Mission Church at 2:30, conducted by Rev. Noreen, of near Stanton, who is an old friend of the family. The remains will be laid to rest in Essex Cemetery, New Addition, Sixth Row, Lot 10. Beside her children, Mrs. Hart leaves a large number of grandchildren and a large circle of friends.
