Mrs. Ida Christine Erickson, a resident of the community for over 50 years, died at her home here Tuesday, June 8, 1943, after a long illness. She was 74 years and 7 months of age. Mrs. Erickson was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Hart, and was born at Andover, Illinois on October 22, 1868. She was baptized in infancy and confirmed at Fremont, Iowa in 1883. On March 3, 1893, she became the bride of Mr. A. J. Erickson, at Fremont, Iowa. Their wedding trip was taken to Wakefield and they have made their home in this community ever since. Mr. and Mrs. Erickson have been faithful members of the Mission Covenant Church since December 28, 1894. Mrs. Erickson was also an active member of the aid society for many years. She was a devoted wife and loving mother. The Ericksons celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary on March 3, 1943. Surviving to mourn her loss are her husband and six children, namely; Bernard of Pasadena, California, Edoff of Marquette, Nebraska, Mrs. Ruth Carfeldt of Chicago, Illinois, Mrs. Ebba Anderson of Oakland, Nebraska, and Emmett and Joseph of Wakefield, Nebraska. One son, David, 21 years old, preceded her in death. There are 18 grandchildren, two brothers, Joseph Hart of Essex, Iowa, and Oscar Hart from Omaha, Nebraska, and two sisters, Mrs. Alfred Engster and Tina Hart, both of Essex, Iowa Word was received Wednesday from Bernard Erickson that he was enroute here. Mrs. Carlfeldt came from Chicago, Illinois on Monday. Mrs. Russell Anderson and Adolph Erickson were here with their parents Sunday and will return before the funeral. JOHN ERICKSON FAMILY Andrew John Erickson, son of Eric and Louisa Peterson was born July 19, 1867 in Linkotland, Ostergotland, Sweden. He immigrated to Red Oak, Montgomery County, Iowa in 1883 at the age of 16. In 1886, he moved to Wakefield, Nebraska and lived for awhile with his half sister, Mrs. Nels Swanson. He attended Park Hill School for a time to learn the English language. In 1888, he received his U. S. Citizenship papers and also attended the organizational meetings of the Swedish Mission Congregation (now Evangelical Covenant) on July 4, 1888. In 1894, he married Ida Christina Hart (born October 22, 1865) of Essex, Page County, Iowa. Ida's father, John Hart, was born in Hellaryd, Stockaryd, Smolan, Sweden on July 12, 1936. In 1859, he married Clara Helena Carlson, born 1842, and they came to America in 1868, settling first at Andover, Illinois, then moving to a farm near Essex, Iowa. Mrs. Hart died April 10, 1914, and John on September 1, 1919 in Essex, Iowa. The John Ericksons began farming on rented land northeast of Wakefield, Nebraska. In October 1897, John bought some land for $25 an acre, building up a farmstead and planting trees. In October 1901, he bought an additional 40 acres from C. T. Barto. When John and T. M. Gusafson traded farms, the Ericksons moved to a farm 4 1/2 miles northwest of Wakefield in 1917. Here they lived until their retirement in 1931, when they moved to Wakefield. They observed their Golden Wedding Anniversary March 3, 1943, and Ida died June 8, 1943, at 75. In 1948, John moved to the Covenant Home in Stromsburg, where he died December 22, 1958, at 91. The Erickson's oldest child, Bernhard, was born March 18, 1894, and married Alice Anderson of Concord, Nebraska. They farmed in this area until the early 1940's when they moved to Pasadena, California. Myron is their only child. Alice died December 11, 1966, and Bernhard died December 3, 1976. Edoff, born February 25, 1896, farmed in this area until moving to Hordville, Nebraska in 1943. He married Ruth Swenson of Central City, Nebraska, and they had four children: Evelyn, Donald, Edward, and Norman. Donald was killed in the Korean Conflict. Ruth died in 1970 and Edoff in 1980. Ruth was born December 15, 1898, and she worked in Omaha, Nebraska and Chicago, Illinois, where she married Gustaf Carlfeldt, a widower with 4 children. They retired to St. Petersburg, Florida, where Ruth still resides. Gustaf died in October 1981. Emmet, born May 1, 1900, farmed with Edoff in the Concord, Nebraska, area for a number of years. He married Dorothy Swenson, a sister of Edoff's wife, Ruth. There are four children, Maynard, Eldon, LaVonne, and Marland. Dorothy died March 30, 1971, and Emmet, February 17, 1979. Ebba, born August 26, 1902, attended Wayne College and taught school. She married Russel Anderson of Oakland, Nebraska, June 27, 1934 and they live on a farm west of Oakland, Nebraska. Their 3 children are Stanley, Claire, and Karen. Joseph, born March 13, 1905, farmed with his father until his parents retired in 1931. He married Edith Sundell on June 8, 1932, and farmed the home place until they moved to Wakefield in 1972. David, the youngest son, was born August 28, 1908, and died at Rochester, Minnesota, November 19, 1929 at the age of 21. Included among John Erickson's descendants are 44 great-grandchildren.
