Description	:	Clarence Andrew (Andy) Edwards, age 97, on this date March 4, 2014 , long time resident of Hillsville, Virginia, departed this earth. He was the second oldest of six boys and two girls born to Mr. and Mrs. C. P. Edwards Known as Andy to his hometown friends, he moved from Independence to Baltimore, Md., to support World War II war efforts where he worked on the B26 Marada Short range bomber assembly line for Glen L. Read More	Clarence Andrew (Andy) Edwards, age 97, on this date March 4, 2014 , long time resident of Hillsville, Virginia, departed this earth. He was the second oldest of six boys and two girls born to Mr. and Mrs. C. P. Edwards Known as Andy to his hometown friends, he moved from Independence to Baltimore, Md., to support World War II war efforts where he worked on the B26 Marada Short range bomber assembly line for Glen L. Martin Aircraft company. He entered the Navy October 13, 1943 where he served on the LST 567, as an all around mechanic, ready for any duty on the ship, as well as on the attack boats, coxswain, gunner, he was ready. His duty took him from facing German U-boats in Guantonoma Bay, Cuba, to shore attacks in the Philippines Islands, Dutch New Guinea, Solomens, Mariana's, at times facing enemy fire. He was part of the boat crew that shuffled great men like, Admiral William F. Halsey, General Douglas Mac Arthur, on that Great Day September 2, 1945, to the USS Missouri, where Mamoru Shigemitsu, Japanese Dignitary and Yoshigjino Umezu, General Hq. signed the Japanese surrender. Andy was awarded 3 bronze stars, Philippine liberaton & 2 stars, Navy Occupation Medal (Asia) American, Victory World War II, plus numerous letters of commendations. After the war Clarence spent the next 30 years with General Motors. Clarence and Versie (Roberts) Edwards were married October 8, 1937. Versie died in August 7, 1993, after a long battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Mariko Marshall Edwards of Hillsville, whom he met and married while working for Wal-Mart; daughter, Nancy MacMillian of New Hampshire; three grandchildren, Erica C. Moody of Bellows Fall, Vermont, Sidney Low III of Winter Port, Maine and Ariana Low of California; stepdaughter, Jeanette Marshall Black and husband Bruce of Fairfax, Va.; brother, John Mack Edwards of Independence, Va.; sisters, Edna Roberts of Independence, Va. and Ruby Bowman of Louisville, Ky. Clarence was a life time member of the VFW Post 115, Hillsville, and a faithful member of Round Knob Church of Christ. Today we celebrate life long memories of the American ideas and patriot Andy left on the shores of Asiatic-Pacific theatre. Family will receive visitors on Sunday, March 9, 2014 from 1 p.m. until time for the service at 2 p.m. at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Chapel, Independence, Va. Minister Ed Buchanan, Minister Bruce A. Black and Ricky Edwards will officiate. Burial to follow in Pilgrims Rest Cemetery, Pine Mountain, Independence, VA. Military rites by Hillsville VFW Post 1115.
