Ronning, 46, a resident of Fort Benton since 1918, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound here Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m. at the home of his mother, Mrs. Emelie Simmons. He had been in poor health for some time. Clarence was the son of Peder and Emelie Norum Ronning, and was born at Wildrose, North Dakota, Dec. 22, 1908. He came to Fort Benton at the age of 10 in 1918 with the Ronning family and, except for brief periods, had lived here since. He attended local schools. Jan. 3, 1941, he enlisted in the army, and was assigned to a field artillery battalion training in California. He was discharged because of poor health Sept. 1, 1942, shortly before his outfit was sent overseas, and to his regret. A younger brother, Emil O. Ronning, died in action at Pearl Harbor, first Chouteau county man killed in World War II. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Emelie Simmons, of this city; four brothers, George, Edward, and Palmer of Fort Benton, and Alf, of San Francisco; a sister, Mrs. Sol Stashi, Fort Benton; and half brother, Harry J. Simmons, of Conrad. Funeral services were held from the Benton Funeral Home chapel Monday afternoon, with Rev. Lloyd Hanley of the Christian church officiating. Burial was in Riverside cemetery. The relatives have the sympathy of all in their loss.
