Ronning, 68, with Rev. Don Robinson of the First Christian church officiating. Burial was in Riverside cemetery. George Ronning died Wednesday morning, Dec. 30, 1970, at a Great Falls hospital. He had been admitted the preceding day but had been in poor health for some time. He was born at Halstad, Minn., March 23, 1902, the oldest of seven children born to Peder and Emelie Ronning. He grew up and attended schools in Halstad, coming to Fort Benton with his parents on St. Patrick's day in 1918. He first worked at Motor Inn Garage, located where the present city hall is. He worked for other garages, drove truck and for some time worked for the county in construction work. In 1941 and 1942 he was employed at airports in Lewistown and Salt Lake City. On April 5, 1942, at Preston, Idaho, he was married to Ruby Hansen Baughman, a widow with four children whom he adopted. George came back to Fort Benton and worked 17-1/2 years for the city of Fort Benton, ten years and four months of which he was superintendent of the city water department, and also served eight years as police magistrate. Besides his wife, he leaves three children by a former marriage, Mrs. Phyllis Kolschefske of Shelby, James Ronning of Halfway, Oregon, and Mrs. Dorothy Cox, of Milligan Route, Great Falls. The four adopted children are Gene Ronning, Billings; Mrs. Mary Sarchet, Denver; Mrs. Beverly Gullickson, Everett, Wash.; and Mrs. Joanne Olson, of Black Eagle. Also surviving are a sister, Mrs. Aagot Stashi, Great Falls; three brothers, Edward Ronning, Fort Benton; Palmer Ronning, Great Falls; and Alfred Ronning, San Francisco; and several grandchildren.
