Kimbrough of near Geneva passed away unexpectedly at the Fillmore County hospital in Geneva, Thursday evening, June 8, 1967, at the age of 81 years, 2 months and 15 days. He had entered the hospital Tuesday and was doing well, expecting to be released Friday. Claude James Kimbrough, only son of James H. and Lucy Jane Kimbrough, was born on a farm near Geneva, Neb., March 24, 1886. He grew up on the farm and attended rural schools and then Geneva high school where he graduated in 1905. He was a fine athlete and starred on the football and basketball teams each year in high school. After graduation from high school, Claude entered the School of Agriculture at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, graduating in 1907. He was active in sports and captained and coached a fine basketball team. He was also a lieutenant in the ROTC. January 12, 1910, he was married to Lilian Anna Schelkopf in the bride’s home hear Shickley. To this union were born five children, Francis, Kenneth, Donald, June (Mrs. Robert Sutter) and Wilma (Mrs. Johnie Girmus). All reside within a few miles of the home place except for Mrs. Sutter, who lives at Red Cloud. Claude spent his entire lifetime on the same farm except for a few years when he resided on a ranch near O’Neil in Holt county. Mr. Kimbrough was active in community activities. He served in school and township offices. He served as a director of the York-Fillmore Federal Land Bank many years. He was also a director of the F. H. A. a number of years and served man-years on the Fillmore county fair board. At the close of World War II he taught a veteran’s training class several years. He was a long time member of the Geneva Masonic lodge and this month was to have been presented the lodge’s Jordan medal as the oldest member in years of membership. When the United Brethren church at Martland disbanded, Mr. and Mrs. Kimbrough joined the Methodist church in Geneva, where Claude continued a faithful member and attendant. The past few weeks Claude had greatly enjoyed the get-togethers of his high school class of 1905, including the alumni banquet. He had been getting an old fashioned buggy ready for use and was planning to give his classmates a horse and buggy ride this summer. The class sat in a body at the funeral service. Mr. Kimbrough is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Lillian, five children, three daughters-in-law, two sons-in-law, 18 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted from the Methodist church in Geneva at 2 p. Saturday, June 10. Rev. K. Orlando Lee officiated. Mrs. Larry Bornschlegl sang “In the Garden” and “Nearer My God To Thee.” Mary Schelkopf was accompanist. Pallbearers were grandsons, Dennis, Donald, Gary, James and Roger Kimbrough, Dale Girmus and Richard Girmus. Interment was in the Geneva cemetery with the Geneva Masonic lodge giving the committal service. The Nebraska Signal 15 June 1967 page 9.
