Read More	KIMBROUGH, DONALD DEAN—Donald Dean Kimbrough was born to Claude James Kimbrough and Lillian Anna Schelkopf Kimbrough on Jan. 29, 1921, at O’Neill, and passed away Oct. 9, 2004, at the Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva at the age of 83 years, eight months and ten days. He was one of five children in the family. Don lived in O’Neill for a few years and then the family moved to a farm south of Geneva. He attended a country school west of the home and then attended high school in Geneva, and graduated in 1938. After graduation, he started farming with his dad until August of 1942, when he was drafted into the Army. On July 22, 1942, he married Eleanor Fay Cox of Carleton and they were married in Marquette. To this marriage five children were born, James, Don Jr., Roger, Clinton and Kathryn. On August 8, 1942, he entered into the United States Army to serve in WWII. During his service in the Army, he was involved with the invasion of France on D-Day, June 6, 1944. His company was the 348th Army Engineers. He continued to serve in the Army until his honorable discharge on Sept. 13, 1946. Upon his discharge, he received the Presidential Distinguished Citation Badge, for the assault on D-Day and also received two battle stars and an arrowhead. After returning home from the service in 1946, Don and Eleanor moved to the farm and started farming again. He farmed until 1983, when he retired but continued to help Roger and Don Jr. on the farm. In 1947, he attended and graduated from the Reisch American School of Auctioneering of Mason City, Iowa. After many years of auctioneering, he later received his real estate broker license and owned his own real estate business. He fed cattle for several years. He also raised and bred quarter horses for over 30 years, winning many awards and honors. “Kims Ole Baldy” was dad’s favorite horse. He worked for Geneva Locker, butchering and processing meat with his brother, Kenneth for several years. He worked at the Davenport and Geneva sale barns for any years. He also judged many county fairs and open horse shows all over Nebraska and nearby states. Don, lived life to the fullest, including working with youth and their 4-H projects. He was a member of the Evangelical Free Church of Geneva, serving as head usher for a while. He loved hunting, fishing, camping, working with horses, and watching his children and grandchildren participating in all their different activities. Don told his Lucky Ten 4-H Club if they could win the county livestock judging contest for five years, he would take them all to supper in Chester. Well, it happened and Don enjoyed watching Blaine and Rodger Richards eat. When the family would get together, Dad always said “get the cards out,” and when Mom said “Don, it’s time to go,” he always replied, “Yes Mother, right after this hand.” Dad would help drive the grain cart during harvest. At times, he would drive the tractor faster than the combine, because he was busy watching the stocks come into the picker head and comment to Roger, “Man, that’s good corn.” Don was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Lillian A. Kimbrough; brothers and sisters-in-law, Kenneth and Viola, and Francis and Amolia; sister and brother-in-law, Wilma and John Girmus; brother-in-law, Aleck Arneson and daughter-in-law, Janelle Kimbrough. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor; sister, June Arneson; sons, James E. , Don Jr. and wife, Karen, Roger and wife, Cathy, Clinton R. and wife, Laurie; daughter Kathryn A. and husband, Marty Peppard; 20 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; several nephews and nieces and many close friends. Funeral services were conducted from the Evangelical Free Church in Geneva on Wednesday, Oct. 13, with Pastor Curt Coddington officiating. Mary Lee Atenhan accompanied Jodi Jolley who sang “How Great Thou Art.” Shane Kimbrough sang “Untitled Hymn: Come to Jesus.” Casket bearers were Jeff, Kevin, Shane, Kyle, Casey, Cale and Jared Kimbrough and Mitch McKnight. Honorary bearers were Joshua and Jordan Kimbrough, Logan Peppard and Blaine Richards. Interment was in the Geneva Public Cemetery. The Nebraska Cemetery October 20th, 2004, page 18.
