Clay August Langer, 87, third of German immigrants, Franz Joseph and Pauline Marie Langer, died Monday, Aug. 21, in a hospital in Lincoln after a brief illness. He would have been 88 years old Aug. 29. The funeral was Friday, Aug. 25, at the First Baptist Church with interment in Evergreen Cemetery. Langer was born in Hardy Aug. 29, 1901, and moved with his family to Harrison Township, Jewell County, Kansas, when he was six weeks old. He went to Fidelity School, No. 102, in Kansas and later attended Superior High School. Aug. 13,1924, he was united in marriage to Lucinda Pearl Ahrens in the Jewell County Courthouse, Mankato. To this union were born two daughters, Lois Louise and Doris Irene. With his wife and children he lived on several farms in Jewell County until 1937 when the family moved to Superior to make their home. He joined the First Baptist Church in Superior in 1938, more than 51 years ago, and served as a trustee and deacon. Langer was a member of Blue Lodge of Master Masons, No. 171, Tadmore Chapter, No. 37, Damascus Council, No. 14, and Palmyra Commandery, No. 27, all in Superior, as well as Tehama Temple of Hastings Shrine. He was a past high priest of Tadmore Chapter and past patron cf Olive Chapter, Order of Eastern Star. For many years he farmed in the White Rock and the Superior areas, and sold fertilizer for Boettcher Supply 13 years until his retirement. During his retirement years he enjoyed many hours stripping, repairing and refinishing antique furniture for people throughout the midwest. He enjoyed the contacts with young people who brought different items of furniture to be renewed as keepsakes in memory of their loved ones. Mr. and Mrs. Langer were honored recently by World Wide Marriage Encounter which reported on their longevity of their marriage and "salluted the beauty of the couple's fidelity, sacrifice and joy in daily married life." They observed their 65th wedding anniversary Aug. 13. Survivors are his widow, Lucinda Pearl; two daughters, Lois Proctor of Sacramento, Calif., and Doris Vestal of Homestead, Fla.; four grandchildren, Penny Kintz of Des Moines, Iowa, Stephen Proctor of San Diego, Calif., Delvin Vestal and DeeAnne Vestal, both of Homestead, Fla.; six great grandchildren; two brothers, Roy Langer of Guide Rock and Glen Langer of Superior; one sister, Pauline Harkins, Superior; and many other relatives.
