Johnson (sp: Johnston) Cleo Desdemona Roberts was born in Hamilton county, Indiana, March 29, 1880, and died at her home in Birmingham, Sept. 22, 1945, following a stroke from which she never regained consciousness. Johnson (sp: Johnston) Cleo Desdemona Roberts was born in Hamilton county, Indiana, March 29, 1880, and died at her home in Birmingham, Sept. 22, 1945, following a stroke from which she never regained consciousness. She was the eldest child of Charles S. and Martha Roberts. In 1898 she came to Birmingham with her family where she attended the Birmingham Public schools and afterwards the I.S.T.C. at Cedar Falls. She was a teacher in the Public Schools for a number of years. She was a member of the Birmingham Presbyterian church, of the Presbyterian Ladies Aid, and was a charter member of the Bethel Ladies Aid and was a faithful attendant and worker when ever her health permitted. She was united in marriage to Rueben S. Johnston Sept. 20, 1911. Until they moved into Birmingham some years ago they made their home just north of the Bethel church. To them three children were born: Mrs. Naomi Roberta Nelson, Mrs. Mary Beulah Elson, and Glenn Lynford Johnston. They, with the husband survive. There are also eight grandchildren: Robert, Desda, Carol, Richard and Larry Nelson; Beverly, Gary and Danny Johnston; to whom she gave unsparingly of her love and devotion; two stepsons, Grant and Ralph Johnston of Birmingham; three sisters, Mrs. Grace Allerdice of Burilngton (sp: Burlington), Mrs. Ethel Williams of Keosauqua, and Mrs. Naomi Lawson of Ottumwa; three brothers, Oscar Roberts of Fairfield, Iowa, Guy Roberts of Fairfield, Connecticut, and Harry Roberts of Long Beach, Calif. Her parents, a brother Orin, and a sister, Stella, preceded her in death. A true friend, a loyal neighbor, loving wife and mother, sister and grandmother, she will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2:30 at the Presbyterian church conducted by the pastor, Rev. H.C. Irvine. Interment in Maple Hill Cemetery. Source: Van Buren Co.
