Fellows died last evening after a protracted illness, at the home of his son, Judge W.B. fellows. He was 72 years of age and a life long resident of Sandwich. He had represented his town in the Legislature, and held various town offices. He leaves one daughter, living in the West, and one son, Judge Fellows. It was while on his way to visit the latter several months ago, that he received a shock, from which he never recovered. The remains will be brought to Sandwich tomorrow for burial. Enoch Q. Fellows was one of the best known soldiers sent by New Hampshire to the Union armies. He had the distinction of going to the front with three of the state's regiments, two of which he was the commanding officer. He was born in Sandwich on June 20, 1825, the son of John and Mary J. Fellows. His paternal great-grandfather Aaron Quimby was a captain in the Revolution and ensign in an alarm company in 1787 with the rank of major. His paternal grandfather was Stephen Fellows, who, when during the Revolution the rumor came that the British were landing at Hampton beach, said, "Run forty bullets as quick as ever were run," and taking his gun mounted his horse and started for the beach to fight the red coats. Until he was seventeen the future colonel attended the district schools and town academy when not at work, but he had earlier determined to obtain a higher education, and step by step he earned his way till he finally secured an appointment at West Point. Entering the academy on his 19th birthday he at once took a good standing in his class. After two and a half years he voluntarily resigned standing at the time of his withdrawal eighth in his class. Among his school fellows were his later comrades-in-arms Generals Burnside, McClellan, Couch and Reno. "Stonewall" Jackson was also a cadet at the time. Mr. Fellows returned home at the earnest solicitation of his father and there remained much of the time till the opening of the Rebellion. From 1847 to 1851 he was regularly appointed drill-master in the state militia. From 1847 to 1849 he was the adjutant of the Nineteenth regiment of militia, and in 1858 was commander of the brigade composed of the militia of Carroll, Belknap and Strafford counties. From 1851 to 1854 he was door keeper of the state Senate. From 1854 to 1857 he held the position of inspector of the Boston custom house, and the next four years were spent at Sandwich. When the Rebellion broke out in 1861 Colonel Fellows was the first man in the state north of Concord to volunteer, and one of the very first to take an active part in enlisting and organizing the three months volunteers called for by President Lincoln. Immediately after the surrender of Fort Sumpter he acted as adjutant during the organization of the First regiment, was commissioned to that rank by Governor Goodwin, served with the regiment during its term of enlistment and returned with it to the State. On the day following the mustering out of the First, he was commissioned colonel of the Third regiment then being formed at Concord. He served as ranking colonel in Sherman's campaign down the coast, in which the regiment participated. Soon after arriving at Hilton Head he was made commander of the post. When his regiment went with other troops to Edisto in April, 1862, Colonel Fellows was directed to accompany the expedition and assume command of the post, which he did. He was relieved from this duty in the latter part of the same month. When General Sherman was relieved in the spring of 1862 Colonel Fellows mentioned to him that owing to impaired health he was desirous of a leave of absence, and General Sherman told him to make application and he would endorse it, which he did in very flattering terms. The leave of absence was speedily forthcoming. Just then, however, a movement was made on Fort Pulaski, and reinforcements were needed at Edisto Island. The Third regiment was recommended for the work and Col. Fellows voluntarily deferred his leave of absence to accompany the command. After Pulaski had fallen he was relieved and went home. While he was at home, without his knowledge, the Governor and council, the adjutant general and the Secretary of State recommended him to President Lincoln for an appointment as brigadier general of the United States Volunteers, as a man well qualified by education , ability and experience to fill the position with honor to the State and credit to the service. When the Ninth regiment was being enlisted Governor Berry offered the command to Col. Fellows, who accepted it. Accordingly, he resigned his position as colonel of the Third. Upon his arrival in Washington in command of his new regiment Col. Fellows was immediately assigned to the command of a brigade. This was about the time of General Pope's defeat and in a few days the army was reorganized under General McClellan, the Ninth being assigned to an old brigade. In less than three weeks after the regiment left home, it was engaged in the battle of South Mountain and Antietam. In the former, the regiment under Colonel Fellows made one the most brilliant bayonet charges of the whole war. It was under Colonel Fellows leadership that the regiment won its appellation of the "Bloody Ninth". He was undoubtedly one of the most capable officers in the army from New Hampshire during the war. He was faithful and attentive to duty, and cool and skillful in action. His military education and experience at a time when there were few men in the state who knew anything about the requirements of troops starting out for the field, were of great benefit to the service. In November after the battle of Antietam, Colonel Fellows health broke down and rather ask for another leave of absence he resigned. Colonel Fellows went West in 1863, remaining there only a few years and returning to his home town, where he became connected to the Carroll County Savings Bank. In the years 1868, 1869 and 1877 Colonel Fellows served his town in the State Legislature, where he was appointed on the military committee. - Manchester Union.
