While I think of "Connie" as "Mom," other people have other words for the special meaning Mom had in their lives. To a few of us, she was: sister, wife, mother, grannie, great-grannie, aunt, sister-in-law, and various other family relationships. We and many others also called her: caring friend, trustworthy confidant and experienced guide. Mom said, "My life has been worthwhile if I have helped some others along the way." Many have said that. Few have lived it was well as she did. As her disease [Chronic Myeolmonoctic Leukemia (CMML)] robbed her of her energy, she often lamented, "I feel worthless." While we pointed out that it was time to serve others by letting them serve her, she was completely unconvinced. She defined herself in terms of her ability to help others. All of us. All of the time. In any way she could. Her role as wife: While Dad and Mom each had (or have, Dad,) their own strengths and weaknesses, their personalities complemented each other exquisitely. They were like two complex pieces of a jig-saw puzzle that fit together to create one beautiful scene. Her role as farmer's wife: she milked the cows when Dad broke his leg twice. She hauled the milk to town every day. She put 100 chickens into the freezer every spring. She detasseled corn and moved irrigation pipe. She drove the milo truck. It was hot and itchy because there was no air conditioning—She proudly confided, "Dad told me I was the best driver he ever had." Her role as Community member: fish frys, ice cream socials, square dances. She was always the willing worker with a friendly smile with the easy laugh who remembered names and always asked the right question at the right time to let people know she cared about them. Her role as Friend: Stitch and Chatter. Card games. One of my earliest memories defines a true sense of security for me: dozing off to the sounds of Mom and Dad playing cards with the Laflins at the grey Formica & chrome kitchen table. Many of her special friends have left this world, but I want to name some of them - for many of you knew them, too, and naming them helps keeps their memory alive - (I apologize for those I inadvertently omit.) Ruby Laflin, Mary Jane Dalrymple, Emma Faidley, Viola Mosburg, Dora Lou Laflin, Orpha Fox, Jimmy Strom and Alpha Haase. Those still among us: Fern Vellucci, Audrey Doberer, and, of course, her neighbor, Beverly Montgomery, who has been a God-send to all of us in many ways. Her role as Mother: the combination of farmer's wife and mother of 3 brought cats, dogs, pet raccoons, skunks, squirrels, crows, and even coyotes into the menagerie. David recalls how Mom helped him concoct the right formula to bottle feed anything he brought home. We all learned to work along side both Dad and Mom. We learned that shared work has value well beyond the almighty dollar. It develops a sense of self-worth, of community, an appreciation of each other and the world around us, and of our many blessings. Nancie recalls that washing windows with Mom – Nancie on the inside and Mom on the outside – was a special time – clean windows and laughter on both sides of the glass! Mom's role as Mother extended to a few special friends of each of her own children --…For David that included Bill Frost and Rex Carlson. For me it was Mike Mackendar. For Nancie it was Nola Alquist and Linda Bauer. Mom's heart was big enough to have special places for those she got to know. Nurturing her family was squarely at the center of her world. Mom's role of giver – included sewing for her children, her children's dolls, and for children she didn't know. All of our houses have many reminders of Mom's generous spirit – beautiful quilts, auction finds, and collections of Beanie Babies. Her role as Wife meant living with the coach. Or, as she put it so well, "How long have I put up with Ball!" But, from that role she developed many other relationships with ball players: Those with Wareen Bigler and Dawn Richter were very special to her and to us. Her role as grannie and great grannie – led to untold numbers of trips to the duck park, cooking, cleaning, babysitting, and all those things that come with loving another generation of her family. We don't have time to reflect on all of Mom's relationships with others… You know who you are and you know what that relationship was and I am guessing you will carry that in your heart for the rest of your life. She loved Shopping -- there are those who say she could have taught courses on couponing. When Cabbage Patch dolls were hard to come by, she could find one. When she had what she needed for her family and friends, she shopped for Lighthouse and other charities. She also had a love for a good Auction. While she didn't always end up with that special item, rest assured that the person who did had paid a lot more than they had intended to. She always loved her pretty flowers and attracting the birds to her feeders. Our road trips always involved making our own music – Please join us in our favorite: Tell Me Why. Mom had a beautiful life. She has inspired many. She has helped many along the way. I am confident that most of us will have to pinch ourselves to be reminded that she is not here; ready for our visit; cooking each of us our favorite foods when we come home. She will live forever. Thank God for the blessing named Connie Coreen Demaray Bauer. Eulogy (above) written and delivered by Connie's son, Ernest A. Bauer. Obituary: Connie Coreen Demaray Bauer was born July 18, 1926, to David and Ethelyn Demaray in Burr Oak, KS. She graduated from Burr Oak High School and was active in 4-H, winning honors with her sewing. She carried her sewing talent through life, making clothes and many quilts for family and friends. Connie married Wade Bauer of Broughton, KS, December 6, 1944, in Chicago, IL. To this union were born three children. Her family was her life, and they were always welcome at "Grannie's." She cooked what she knew they liked. She was a devoted farmer's wife in the Broughton community. In 1965 the family moved their home to Clay Center. In 1966 they moved into the home they built on Lafayette Street where they have resided for the past 45 years. She was a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church. Survivors include her husband; sons, David Arlan and wife Ann of Kearney, NE, and Ernest Allan and wife Frances of Davisburg, MI; daughter, Nancie Lyn and husband Tom of Lenexa, KS; 12 grandchildren, Paul, Marc, Andrew, Rebecca, Joshua, Andrea, Wade, Russell, Abigail, Bradley, Gregory, and Douglas; 26 great-grandchildren, Matthew, Sarah, Meghan, Hannah, Ryan, Scott, Allison, Julia, Sophia, Henry, Benjamin, Nora, Madilynne, Lydia, Lucas, Peter, Adam, Jackson, Emma, Greta, Hudson, Audrey, Amelia, Oliver, Oscar, Addison; sister, Rose Marie and husband Keith McKeown of Superior, NE; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, August 31, 2011 at 10:00AM at the United Methodist Church in Clay Center, KS. Burial will be at the Broughton Cemetery, Clay County, Kansas. Visitation will be held on 3-8 PM Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials can be made to the Clay County Educational Endowment Association.
