And there is much to celebrate, as one of his offspring I may well be just a bit biased. Dad was very willing to take on roles that required a somewhat public life and by his will and skill he influenced many things that have had a positive impact on a lot of lives and will continue to do so in the future. First of course is Girls fast pitch softball – Most of you know there is now a book about the Clay Center B's. I think that a paragraph from Harriet Merten Lard sums up what the B's meant to hundreds of girls who played on the teams over the years. Harriet wrote: "Many lessons were learned from Bill and Wade – how to treat people, how to have fun, how to be gracious in victory and defeat. They always made us feel good about ourselves. Playing ball is still one of my very best memories of growing up." Dad's version was, "Our goals are first to be ladies, second to have fun, to be good sports at all times and to play the game to the best of our ability." Mother often used a one word expression to voice her observation about what Dad was usually "eating and breathing" – "BALL!" She was the only one who knew about all the untold hours he spent organizing teams, tryouts, practices, clinics, tournaments, schedules, snack shack, buying equipment for players and for fields, preparing fields, and so on.. But, she was well aware of what his dedication meant to the girls, their families and the Clay Center community. Dad displayed an extraordinary love of music his whole life. One of his early memories is of his father picking him and Wynn up by the back of their bib overall – with their accordions on their shoulders and putting them on a hay wagon to play for a group of people. One of my early memories is of him calling square dances in the basement of the Broughton School house. He loved to play the pump organs he refurbished. He loved to play the accordion. He loved to sing. He loved to attend musical programs and watch the PBS music specials on television. He blended soft ball & music before most games with "He's Got The Whole World In His Hands." How about one verse? Ray Frigon shared that Dad pulled together a little band at Country Place: an accordion, piano, pump organ, and violin. They practiced for 4 months to put on a half hour program – and had a great time doing it. Dad was a successful farmer. He raised all the usual crops – wheat, corn, sorghum and alfalfa and cattle and hogs. He also milked cows. Our 25 cow Grade A dairy sold raw milk to Fellers here in Clay Center for years. Cows were milked at 5:00 AM and 5 PM 365 days a year. We learned what work looked like by being around Dad on the farm. (By the way, if you have never moved irrigation pipe through a field of 8' tall corn, you have missed an interesting experience!) He loved that farm. The second time I ever saw Dad shed a tear was the day our cows were sold. Milford Dam's condemnation of our farm was inevitable, so he sold the cows rather than invest in bulk milking equipment. It was a very sad day for him, the closing of a chapter in our lives. If Mom is up there listening to this, she would probably like me to mention that fixing fence was not his top priority. It was not unusual for us to have to round up cows that that walked through our fences and she gave him generally unheeded advice about how fixing fence would save both time and effort. Dad was the Farm Loan Representative for People's National Bank (now United Bank and Trust) for 25 years. He worked with individual farmers and their families to help them use borrowed money in ways that resulted in positive financial results. At his and Wynn's 90th birthday party, one of the wives of a local farmer shared a story about how Dad's advice had a lasting influence on her family. They were just starting out and were hoping to improve their cash flow. Dad suggested they borrow enough to buy a few bred sows and raise pigs for a while. They did it and it proved successful, but, she shared, "I often muttered fairly unkind words about Wade as I was shoveling hog manure." "I have a college degree," she would say to herself, "and here I am doing this!" But, the story was about appreciating the sound business plan he had helped them develop. After he retired Dad took some classes at the high school to learn to use woodworking tools. He ended up helping many kids with their projects over the years. And he began making furniture. He found that if he started with a standing tree and had it milled and dried, walnut lumber didn't have to be very expensive. He made a lot of walnut, oak, and cedar furniture, bowls, wooden quilt blocks, cutting boards, even grandfather clock cabinets. If you want to see a wide selection of the things Dad made, visit any one of our houses. . . Dad's three children have never wondered whether or not they were loved. That didn't mean we always got our way, or that we were never punished. But the love was always there. Like most farm families in those days, we didn't need to wonder where he was or what he was doing, because he didn't go off to work every morning and return at 6 PM. Working together on the farm and in the house gave each of us a sense of belonging that we cherish to this day. Dad was a very positive person. After moving into Country Place, he loved to make peach cobbler for the residents just because it was fun. He often used the same phrases to remind us of truths worth sharing. One was, "We are all ignorant, just about different things." That reflects the extent to which he had internalized and lived by the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Yes, Dad had a long life, but, more importantly he had a full and meaningful life. He inspired many. His legacy in this community is as positive as his attitude toward life. He will live in our hearts forever. Thank God for the blessing named Wade Arlan Bauer. Obituary: Wade Arlan Bauer was born September 19, 1923, in Clay Center, KS, along with his twin brother, Wynn Aral, to Ernest William and Pera Aral (Nemnich) Bauer. He graduated from Clay Center High School in 1941. Wade married Connie Coreen Demaray on December 6, 1944, in Chicago, IL. Three children blessed this union: David, Ernest, and Nancie. A veteran of World War II, Wade served with the U.S. Army in Fort Knox, KY. He was very active in the Broughton community, coaching youth baseball, softball, and basketball teams. He was active as a 4-H leader and Clay County fair board president. He started the Gospel Sing in conjunction with the Clay County Fair. He helped initiate the Inspirational Sing through the Arts Council. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and Kiwanis Club where he served as the lieutenant governor of district 4. After his farming career, Wade worked at Peoples National Bank as the farm loan representative for 25 years. Wade co-founded the B's girls fast-pitch softball program in the 1950s. He devoted many hours to working with the youth of the community, managing and coaching the B's softball teams for over 50 years. He was inducted into the Kansas Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame in 1993. The Wade Bauer Softball Complex was named in his honor in 2007. Wade was an avid woodworker. He built beautiful furniture and refurbished pump organs. He enjoyed his garden and fruit trees. During the past three years, Wade resided at Country Place Senior Living in Clay Center. Wade was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Connie, in 2011; sister, Greta (Pat), in 1968; brother, Gail, in 2013, and brother, Lafe, in 2014. Survivors include his sons, David and wife Ann of Kearney, NE; Ernest and wife Frances of Davisburg, MI; daughter Nancie and husband Thomas Stelle of Lenexa, KS; 12 grandchildren: Paul, Marc, Andrew, Rebecca, Joshua, Andrea, Wade, Russell, Abigail, Bradley, Gregory, and Douglas; 30 great-grandchildren: Matthew, Sarah, Meghan, Hannah, Ryan, Scott, Allison, Julia, Sophia, Henry, Benjamin, Nora, Andrew, Madilynne, Lydia, William, Lucas, Peter, Adam, Jackson, Emma, Greta, Hudson, Audrey, Amelia, Oliver, Oscar, Addison, Madeleine, and Emaline; brothers Wynn and wife JoAnn of Clay Center, KS, Robert and wife Jane of Wichita, KS; sister Pera Beth and husband Bill Eichelberger of Denver, CO; many nieces and nephews; and a host of softball players and coaches dear to his heart. Visitation will be at the Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home, Thursday, August 6, 2015 from 3-8PM. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30AM Friday, August 7, 2015 at the Clay Center United Methodist Church. The meeting was held following the supper. Pera Beth and Gloria Bauer gave a demonstration on correct measuring and equivalent. Elizabeth Eiznhamer gave a review of Stephen Foster's life. He was a writer of folk songs and often attended Negro camp meetings and there studied the music of the colored people. Chief among Foster's characteristics was his tenderness. This quality is reflected in many of his songs. A few of his pieces are "Oh! Susanna," "My Old Kentucky Home" and "Old Black Joe." Wynn and Wade Bauer played a few of Foster's songs on their accordions. --- In memoriam: To all the Bauer Bunch, We want to express our sympathy on the passing of Wade. He was a terrific man whom we had an immense amount of respect for. He was a tremendous influence in our community. He was one of those "rocks" in the community who helped give direction to society. The influence he and Connie had in our community is evident over and over again exemplified in those whose lives they touched.
