The photo of her shown on this memorial is from the Fairfield High School Class of 1919 yearbook "The Quill", as a faculty member. ---------- Fairfield Daily Ledger Wednesday October 12, 1949 Pg. 1 Col. 1 CORA BALL, 75, MUSIC LEADER, DIES AT HOME Cora Anna Ball, Parsons college instructor emeritus and prominent in Fairfield music circles for many years, passed away at her home, 201 East Kirkwood street, last night. She retired as an active music instructor at Parsons college and was seriously ill for the past several weeks. Last rites will be Thursday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Presbyterian church with Dr. C.R. Douglass in charge. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. Miss Ball served as a music instructor at Parsons college and the Fairfield public schools over a span of nearly a half century. A native of Fairfield, she graduated from Parsons college with a bachelor's degree in 1895, and received her music degree two years later. In 1898 she graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, after which she started on her long and successful career as an instructor. Besides her many years of service in Fairfield schools, she also taught music in the academy at Washington, and Huron college at Huron, South Dakota. She took up her duties as instructor of piano and voice at Parsons college in 1902. From 1903 to 1907 she served as instructor in the Fairfield public schools. After leaving the Fairfield schools for a short time, she returned to the pubic schools and taught music in the grade schools until 1926, or for a period of 15 years. She returned to the Parsons college staff in 1930 and continued as music instructor until her retirement in 1941. While serving as an instructor, and after her retirement, Miss Ball was an active supporter of Parsons college. She always took an active part in college affairs and edited the college quarterly alumni for many years. Miss Ball was also widely known in state music circles, and was a charter member of the Chicagoland Music Festival group. Her efforts were not confined to music however. She was a member of Chapter C, P.E.O., Elzevir Sorority, Woman's club, Presbyterian church, and served the community for nine years as member of the public library board. Miss Ball was appointed to the board in 1932 to fill the vacancy caused by the death of her mother. She was named president of the board in 1938, a position she held until her resignation in June, 1949. In memory of the former board member, the library will remain closed during the funeral services Thursday afternoon. It will open at 3:00 p.m. instead of 2:00, and will close at its regular hour, 6:00 p.m. Cora Anna Ball, 75, was born January 26, 1874, in Fairfield, the son (sic. daughter) of the late W. C. and Mary Campbell Ball. One brother, Frank, precedded (sic) her in death in 1913.
