Both of these sources have the DOB as being October 18, 1874, born in Abingdon, Jefferson county, Iowa. The DOD is indicated as being October 27, 1948, Fairfield, Jefferson county, Iowa. The headstone inscription, however, has the DOB as Oct. 21, 1874 and the DOD as Oct. 25, 1948. It isn't known why those dates were engraved, perhaps based on incorrect information provided to the engraver, or just an engraving error that wasn't possible to correct after the headstone was installed. Will use the DOB/DOD on this memorial per the inscription data per F/A/G guidelines, but it is the opinion of this contributor (not related to the deceased) that the death record and obituary information are much more likely to be accurate. There is no valid Iowa birth record for Cora to document the exact date of her birth, as birth (and death) records were not mandated to be recorded in Iowa until 1880 and after. The death record, however, is considered to be a vital record and the entry of the birth date explicitly stated as being October 18, 1874 does carry legal weight. Also, while the above mentioned edit for "Belle" for the middle name is being accepted in good faith, it should be noted that the death record stated the middle name as "Bell". That said, "Belle" is a more feminine gender name, so it is quite possible that the "Bell" as used on the death record was a clerical error. //rkt October 25, 2016 ------------------- Fairfield Ia. Daily Ledger Thursday, October 28, 1948 Pg. 8 Col. 2 DEATH CLAIMS CORA JOHNSON Cora B. Johnson, 74, a resident of Fairfield for nearly a half century, passed away at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday at the Jefferson county hospital. She became seriously ill on Tuesday and was taken to the hospital Wednesday noon. Last rites will be held Friday at 2:30 p.m. at the Christian church with Rev. S. P. Williamson in charge. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. Cora B. Johnson was born October 18, 1874, in Abingdon, the daughter of the late Thomas and Lucinda Jaques. She spent her early life in Abingdon and Eldon. Mrs. Johnson moved to Fairfield 49 years ago. She was united in marriage on October 25, 1899, to John M. Johnson who preceded her in death in 1917. Mrs. Johnson was a member of the Christian church. Eastern Star, Senior Eastern Star club, past noble grand of the Rebekahs, president of the Loyal Women's class of the Christian church, and a member of the Naomi Rebekah club. Mrs. Johnson is survived by one son, Marshall Johnson, Fairfield, and two brothers, William Jaques, Fairfield, and Marve (sic) Jaques, Trenton, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one sister and two brothers. The body is at the Monger funeral home. It will be taken to the church at 1:30 p.m. Friday.
