Description	:	Cornelius "Corne" E. Ellis, 85, of Brandon, S.D., formerly of Ottumwa, passed away peacefully on Nov. 23, 2010, after a brief stay at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, S.D. He was born on Oct. 15, 1925, to James and Dora(Johnston)Ellis in Lucerne, Mo. Cornelius was a World War II Veteran, joining the Navy in 1943. Ellis, 85, of Brandon, S.D., formerly of Ottumwa, passed away peacefully on Nov. 23, 2010, after a brief stay at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, S.D. He was born on Oct. 15, 1925, to James and Dora(Johnston)Ellis in Lucerne, Mo. Cornelius was a World War II Veteran, joining the Navy in 1943. He served upon the USS ARD 17 as a Motor Machinist, 3rd Class, operating a 50-ton crane. His tour included Okinawa and the Philippines. He was honorably discharged in 1946. After leaving the Navy, Cornelius worked at John Morrell both in Ottumwa and Sioux Galls, S.D., for 35 years. On Feb. 22, 1958, he was joined in marriage to Marguerite Slutz. They were married for nearly 50 years prior to her passing in September 2007. Cornelius had a great love of music all of his life. He sang and traveled with the Ottumwa Morrell Chorus, was a member of the "Rhythm Kings" for many years in Iowa playing the guitar and percussion and also played in a band while he and Marguerite were "snowbirds" wintering in Texas. After retiring from John Morrell, Cornelius took up wood carving. He really enjoyed this hobby and became quite skilled, creating beautiful works of art. He was a member of the South Dakota Wood Carvers. Also after retirement, he worked at Pine Lake Hills caring for the grounds. He enjoyed fishing and went as often as he could, either with Marguerite or friends, fishing in the John Morrell tournament numerous years. Cornelius was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan. He and his family made many trips to St. Louis. Highlights for him would include interacting with Stan "The Man" Musial warming up before a game in St. Louis and having his photo taken with Ozzie Smith. Cornelius was a charter member of the Optimist Club in Brandon, S.D., participating in many community activities. He also enjoyed working in his garden and the companionship of his pet dachshunds, Red Baron, Radar, Hawkeye and PeeWee. Grateful for sharing his life are his children with Marguerite, James Ellis of Brandon, S.D., and Melinda(LeRoy)Huntimer of Sioux Falls, S.D.; his daughter, Charlotte Brasher; stepdaughter, Shirley Brown and stepson-in-law, Fred Fisher, all of Ottumwa; his brother, George(Lorraine)Ellis of Sioux Falls, S.D., and his sister, Willadene Thompson of Ottumwa; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces. In addition to his wife, he was also preceded in death by his sister, Maxine Burkhalter; brother, Dale Elis; stepdaughter, Carole Fisher; stepson-in-law, Larry Brown; and son-in-law, Tony Brasher. Visitation will be from noon to 5pm Sunday at George Boom Funeral Home with family present from 3-5pm. A funeral service will be 1pm Monday, also at George Boom Funeral Home with internment following at Hills of Rest Memoraial Park, Sioux Falls, S.D. Donations may be made in Cornelius' name to the Brandon Valley Optimist Club.
