Obermiller, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Art Obermiller of south of Loup City, returned to Sherman county after a long journey from Iwo Jima last week for burial in Evergreen cemetery here Thursday, Dec. 30. The military funeral, sponsored by the Burrowes American Legion post here, was conducted in the Loup City Methodist church by the Rev. S. E. Oakes, Baptist minister. All business places in Loup City were closed from 1 to 3 p.m. during the funeral, by proclamation of Mayor A. L. Brown, honoring the memory and services of Roy Obermiller. Roy Obermiller was born Jan. 19, 1924. He graduated from the Wiggle Creek high school, receiving a scholarship, and attended business college in Grand Island. He spent several months in government work in Washington and Detroit. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in November, 1942. After basic training in the Marines, he was assigned as a paratrooper and participated in the campaigns of Guadacanal, Bougainville and Choiseul. On Feb. 16, 1944, he arrived back in the United States for reassignment. As private first class, he was sent to the Hawaiian Islands, later being promoted to corporal to the Marine ground forces. He had been overseas more than six months in his second assignment when he met death at Iwo Jima Feb. 28, 1945, from wounds received in action. He was a member of the Fifth Marine Division. He is survived by his parents, a brother, Ralph, and two sisters, Mrs. Tony Kochanowski of Ord and Mrs. Mal Richmond of Los Angeles, Calif., three nephews and two nieces. A sister, Lucille, died in 1923. Out-of-town relatives present for the funeral included Mrs. and Mrs. George wagoner, Wilbur Wagoner and Ferdinand Obermiller, all of Riverton, Wyo., and Otto Obermiller of Kearney.
