Haselwood, 29, was killed in action Oct. 17 as he was helping lead an infantry unit in the invasion of Italy, his wife has been informed by the war department. The son of Mr. and Mrs. E.E. Haselwood of Silver Lake, the Captain was mentioned in a recent broadcast from the Italian front, crediting him with leading an attack on a bridge across the Volturno river. He was graduated from Kansas State College in 1937 and was working on his Ph.D. degree at St. Louis when he was called up as a reserve officer April 29, 1942. A brother, Noel, a corporal, was killed in Sicily, Aug. 9. Another brother, Dale, is a mechanic at the Topeka Army Air Base. Besides his wife, Capt. Haselwood leaves three small children 6 and 5 years and 6 months old. Mrs. Haselwood is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Wenger of Gardner, Kansas, and a sister of Mrs. Leo Engelken, 5919 Granada, Mission, Kansas. He is a nephew of Ed and Elmer McClellan of Glasco. ****************************************** Glasco Sun, Nov. 24, 1949, page 1: Memorial services for Noel and Anson Haselwood will be held at the Zachary Taylor National cemetery, Louisville, Ky., at 1:00 p.m. on November 28, 1949. Noel, with several of his comrades, was killed by an explosion August 9, 1943. As they could not be identified, the remains had to be buried in a National cemetery. Anson was killed October 15, 1943, by a German tank. His remains will be interred beside the group. Noel and Anson Haselwood were the sons of Mr. and Mrs. E.E. Haselwood of Route 1, Topeka, and brothers of Dale and Everett Haselwood and Mrs. Philip Brown of Silver Lake, Kansas. Sharlet, Alan and Craig, of 319 Hillside, Topeka, are the children of Capt. LeRoy Anson Haselwood.
