McCreary, was born on June 1, 1888 at Callaway in Custer County, Nebraska, his parents being George O. and Clara B. (McCreary) Benger, the former a native of England the latter of Ohio. The parents were Episcopalians and the father was a member of the Knights of Pythias. Besides Curtis B. there was but one other child: Glady, who is now the wife of Harry Lamb, cashier of the Seven Valleys Bank, and who has one son. Son of a well-known stockman, Curtis began to show inherited predilection for the stock-business also. He earned his first money taking care of a bunch of hogs for a neighbor; secured a little pig which he raised, sold and bought more pigs. Her parents after he left Callaway schools sent him to the University of Nebraska to the agricultural college. In spring of 1909 when his father was in the firm of Benger & Decker, hardware-implements and Hereford registered cattle, Curtis B. Benger bought Mr. Decker’s interest in the stock business and formed a partnership which association was successfully continued until the death on April 1, 1916 of George O. Benger; this son purchased the interest of the estate and has carried on this livestock business ever since, constantly expanding. Some ¼ of a mile west of Callaway, Curtis B. Benger has 640 acres of fine valley land, 240 acres of it farmland and 115 acres of alfalfa, has a beautiful residence and substantial handsome other buildings and well-equipped with 90 head in 1919 of full-blooded registered Herefords, had had several champion prize-winners including the noted “Beau Carlos” No. 496668, won first prize in Denver Stock Show in January of 1916. For 8 years since 1910 he was Secretary of the Nebraska Hereford Breeders Association and sales-manager for same. He also has in 1918 some 250 to 300 Poland-China hogs and some large black hogs, is an energetic, progressive man of absolute integrity. On June 1, 1909 at Callaway, he married Miss Lydia Hebbel, daughter of Detelf Hebbel. They are parents of 2 children, Mabel E. Benger and Ruth H. Benger. Mr. and Mrs. Curtis B.
