Description	:	Biography: George O. Benger was born in England on October 23, 1856, the youngest of the 11 children of William and Jane Benger. In the fall of 1875 he left his native land and upon reaching the United States he settled in York County, Nebraska where he engaged in farming and stock-raising. In February of 1880, he came to Custer County and took a homestead on Section 15, Township 17, Range 23; later that year, he came to Callaway and engaged in the livery business, Callaway just having come into existence. In the fall of 1875 he left his native land and upon reaching the United States he settled in York County, Nebraska where he engaged in farming and stock-raising. In February of 1880, he came to Custer County and took a homestead on Section 15, Township 17, Range 23; later that year, he came to Callaway and engaged in the livery business, Callaway just having come into existence. In 1890, he sold his business and purchased Arthur Bird’s hardware stock, continued this enterprise until selling it to Higbee and Keys some years later. He spent 4 or 5 years on the ranch, then returned to Callaway where he was one of the organizers of the Callaway State Bank of which he is still a stockholder. This bank was organized March 1, 1902, with first officers being …; it had a capital stock of $10,000. In Sept 1, 1911, George O. Benger was President, … with increase of capitol stock to $15,000 and $3000 surplus, occupying a handsome building with deposits in 1911 of $100,000. It is one of the sound financial institutions there. Mr. Benger is also associated with his son in breeding Hereford cattle and English Black Hogs, having the only herd of these hogs west of the Missouri River now. He has always retained land interest in the County, ranching and stock raising. Mr. Benger on June 1, 1884, was married at Callaway, to Miss Clara McCleary [sic], the daughter of John and Nancy McCleary [sic], Miss Clara being a native of Indiana but raised in Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. Benger have had 5 children, with 2 now surviving, Curtis B. Benger, married and with 1 child living on Benger stock-ranch west of Callaway; and Gladys E. Benger, now wife of H. H.
