Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, December 1, 2007 in the Zion Lutheran Church in Chappell with Pastor Philip Found officiating. Burial will follow in the Chappell Cemetery. Curtiss was born on January 27, 1918 to William Webster Routh and Alice Marie (Nelson) Routh in Adams County, Nebraska. He was raised on a farm four and a half miles northwest of Holstein, Nebraska, and attended the country school a mile north of their farm home. He attended the Holstein High School, graduating in May of 1935. After graduation, Curtiss helped his father on the farm, worked in Idaho potato fields and later went to California to work at several positions before returning to help again on his parents' farm. On October 15, 1938 he married a former classmate, Magdelyn A Einspahr, a local country schoolteacher. She continued teaching while he farmed and sold Allis Chalmers tractors in Hastings, Nebraska. In 1944, Curtiss and Magdelyn opened a General Electric Appliance Store in Minden, Nebraska. He later worked for Tri-County Irrigation and then the Kansas Nebraska Gas Co., where in 1951 he accepted a position in Chappell as service manager. In Chappell, Curtiss built a home for his family and with his wife, Magdelyn, purchased the Sweden Crème drive-in. He studied art with Aaron Pyle, served on the Board of Directors for the Halsey Art Association and was a member of the Association of Nebraska Art Clubs. Curtiss expressed his artistic talents by creating paintings of the region and painting birds that he had carved. During winters spent in Arizona he painted rocks and made jewelry. Survivors include one son, Larry and wife Caroline Routh of Lincoln, NE; three daughters: LaDell Stonecipher of Stockton, CA, LuAnn and husband Bobby Wiskera of Highland Village, TX and Lanae Routh of Watauga, TX; seven grandchildren: Brian and Alexa Beutler Stonecipher, Scott and Judi Stonecipher, Kristi and Michael Robey, Curtiss Routh, Allen Wiskera, Emily Wiskera and Rick Hecker and four great-grandchildren: Chloe Stonecipher, Lillie Stonecipher, Willa Stonecipher and Lauren Robey. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and his wife of 69 years, Magdelyn Routh.
