December 16, 1922 aged 86 years and 20 days. Mr. Stayner united with the Methodist Church October 13, 1855. When a young man Mr. Stayner moved to Jones County, Iowa and was married to Sarah Seriven on May 9, 1867. To this union were born nine children, one of whom died in infancy. Those living are Lawrence W. Stayner of McCook; Elmer E., Mrs. J. B. Hazelbaker and Mrs. Lee Hill of Lincoln; Mrs. Martha Ferree, J. C. and C.L. Stayner and Miss C. E. Stayner of Edgar. Mr. Stayner was a member of the 2nd Iowa Infantry Company * and took part in Sherman's march in the . In 1872 he moved to Clay County, Nebraska taking an active part in the early history of Edgar the first Sunday school at the * town of Edgar and * in the building of the different churches of the town. He was active in the educational religion and political affairs of the community. For about fifty years he and his companion labored thru the hardships of pioneer life and contributed their pa* to the welfare of the community until failing health compeled (sic) them to retire from active life. Mrs. Stayner preceded him to the life beyond September 19, 1921. He was a kind, loving husband an indulgent father and a friend in all. He leaves to mourn his departure the eight sons and daughters above names, nine grand children and eight great- grandchildren. This short sketch is but a feeble effort to picture this long and active life but the great bulk of the deeds and self-denial of such a pioneer remains to be told. The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church on Sunday afternoon, December 17 at two o'clock, the sermon being preached by the pastor Rev W. C. Brewer. The hymns, "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere." "Sometime We'll Understand" and "Lead, Kindly Light," were sung by a quartet, Messrs Clair Voorhees and J. G. Walley, Mrs. W. J. Breckenridge and Miss Rhodes. The text was Phil. 3:12,13. The body was laid away in the Edgar Cemetery. All the children were present at the funeral.
