Stayner Elmer Ellsworth Stayner was born August 15, 1869 and died at his home in Edgar August 12, 1935, at the age of 65 years, 11 months and 27 days, When a small child he came with his family to Nebraska where he lived until his death. He was married to Miss Hattie Stratton of Hayes Center, Nebraska, April 26, 1894, who preceded him to the Great Beyond in December 1912. About 1889 he began working for the C. B. & Q. R. R. Co. and continued to work for the same company until ill health compelled him to retire. As an appreciation of his long service the company presented him with a button which speaks of forty years of service. Mr. Stayner was a member of the Masonic Lodge and had been a member of the I. O. O. F. lodge for twenty years. His father, mother, an infant sister and one brother preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn his death, four sisters, Saphrona Hill of Grand island, Martha J. Ferree of Edgar, Mary E. Hazelbaker of Lincoln and Celia E. Stayner of Edgar; two brothers L. W. Stayner of McCook and C. L. Stayner of Edgar, besides many other relatives and a host of friends. What would life be but just a slavish toil If at the end it but merged into soil, But as the seed that dieth in the ground Springs forth so life, so in each life is found That germ of hope which, when is laid way This mortal frame within its bed of clay, Shall bud and bloom into that glorious state Where even now our loved ones watch and wait, That beaten road which loved ones feet have trod Is mine to tread, and upward walk to God. And so, in knowledge that my faith makes plain I know that in God's time I'll see again Those I have loved; that on the further shore I'll clasp their hands and see them smile once more. And in that simple faith I'll work until My waking eyes behold God's glories. Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 14, 1935, at 2:30 p.m., at the Presbyterian Church in Edgar, conducted by Rev T. S. Hughes. Floyd A. Hanson, J. Robt. Olseene, J. G. Walley and J. M. McGhie sang, accompanied at the organ by Miss Lois Walley. The Edgar Masonic Lodge joined with the Fairfield Lodge in conducting the services at the grave. Pallbearers were C. H. Merrill, Harry Young, F. A. Westering, O. A. Schlichtman, James Chance and J. G. Walley. Interment was made in the Edgar Cemetery.
