Description	:	Note: A previous Evergreen cemetery canvass of inscriptions inadvertently led someone to interpret the DOB inscription as being 1875. Upon personal review of that inscription, and using the obituary age at death information (24 years 11 months and 14 days) and the John Schaefer 1880 U.S. family census, it would appear that Daisy was actually born on/about Dec. 30, 1878. Will use that for her DOB for this memorial, replacing the 1875 DOB previously used. There is at least one family group sheet for this family compiled in 1993 that appears now to have switched the DOB's for Daisy... First given name was Wilhelmena per her obituary, but will use the name Daisy as used on the headstone monument and individual headstone that sits on the east side of the family monument. The 1880 family census also referred to her as "Daisy". ------------------ Note: this memorial is updated a/o January 6/7, 2017 with obituary transcription. Jefferson County Republican Friday Dec. 18, 1903 Pg. 1 Col. 1 & 2 Obituary. Wilhelmena Daisy Schaefer (sic) died at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Schaefer, in this city Monday, December 14th, 1903, at 3:40 p.m. aged 24 years, 11 months and 14 days. Deceased was born and reared in this city. Six years ago last September she began work in our office as a compositor, and for four consecutive years she was a faithful hand. In the summer of 1900 she contracted a severe cold which induced lung trouble. In the fall of 1901, acting upon the advice of her physician, she decided to take a rest so she went to Marshalltown where she remained nine months with her sister, Mrs. Chas. Fletcher. The change seemed to have benefited her somewhat, but she could not get rid of that cough. In the fall of 1902, thinking she was again able to work, she resumed her position in our office and remained until spring when the state of her health compelled her to quit work. She was very poorly all summer, but able to be up and around, going almost daily to the doctor's office for treatment. On Sabbath she was not feeling quite so well, having taken a little cold. Early Monday morning she complained of a difficulty in breathing. Herr mother stirred up the fire and when the room was warm she arose and sat by the fire for some time, ate some breakfast, and after a while lay down again. About 10 o'clock a physician was summoned. The family did not feel much alarmed until about noon, when it became apparent that she was sinking. Everything that could be done for her was done, but to no avail. At 3:40 she sank peacefully to rest. She retained consciousness until the last and expressed her readiness and willingness to go. She was very anxious to see her father who was absent from home but realizing that she could not, said "Tell him that I love him." She was the most unselfish, self-sacrificing girl we ever knew, often denying herself some coveted pleasure that others might enjoy it. Being of a cheerful, lively disposition, she made many friends, not only among the young, but among the older people also. She always had a pleasant greeting for every one, which endeared her to the hearts of those with whom she came in contact. A kind, affectionate, dutiful daughter, sister and friend. She will be greatly missed not only in the home, but by a large circle of friends. She united with the M. E. church during Rev.Kimball's pastorate here. Father, mother, four sisters and two brothers are left to mourn their loss. The immediate cause of her death was la grippe. Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by her pastor, Rev. Osborne, assisted by Rev. Corkey of the Presbyterian church. The remains were laid to rest in the Evergreen cemetery there to await the resurrection morn.
