Fairfield Daily Journal Friday July 31, 1914 Pg. 3 Col. 3 OLD RESIDENT PASSED AWAY John Schafer (sic)died Thursday afternoon, July 30th at his home at 106 West Adams street after an illness of over a year. Death was due to a complication of diseases. Mr. Schaefer was 73 years old. He was born March 18, 1841 in Reinphaulst, Germany and came to America with his parents when he was 13 years old. They settled in Milwaukee. On January 9th, 1865 he was united in marriage with Wilhemina (sic) Weitzel, and two years later they moved to Iowa, locating in Fairfield which has since been their home. years ago, Nine children were born to this union, two dying in infancy, Daisy preceding her father ten years ago. He is survived by his wife and six children who are: John M. of Ottumwa, Mrs. Maud Fletcher of Des Moines, Mrs. Roy Hutchison of Mediapolis, W. J. Schafer, Mrs. Jas. Young and Gertrude Schafer and one granddaughter Cora Schafer, all of this city. For a number of years Mr. Schafer operated a broom factory factory here and later was employed as a traveling salesman. In later years he was employed at the Louden Machinery Co. until failing health caused him to retire from active work. He was a loving husband and a kind fatherand was a patient sufferer to the end. He will be missed both in his home and among his many friends. The funeral services will be held Saturday morning at ten o'clock from St. Mary's Catholic church and interment will be in Evergreen cemetery.
