Fairfield Daily Ledger Wednesday March 27, 1929 Pg. 5 Col. 4 OBITUARY WILLIAM J. SCHAEFER William J. Schaefer, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Schaefer, was born in Fairfield, Iowa, February 17, 1868 and passed away in Fairfield at his home 803 South Sixth street, March 14, 1929. His father passed away in 1914. His aged mother, Mrs. John Schaefer still survives him. He was married in this city to Lida Clark and to this union were born four sons and one daughter. This wife and two sons have since passed away. After the death of his first wife he married Elizabeth Taylor and to them was given a daughter the mother and wife passing away when the daughter was only five days old (sic. not sure if this is correct, as a daughter Florence was living a/o 1929). Some years later he married Nova Reidel, who still survives him. She has been a loving and faithful wife never tiring of loving service, administering unto him every need and comfort possible during his years of suffering from bronchial asthma. But with this tenderest care and medical aid and change of climate several times nothing seemed to improve his condition and he was called home soon after reaching his 61 birthday. A few years ago he was converted to Christ in a prayer meeting held in a church near his hoe. Ne never united with a church society but continued the profession of a christian until the day of his death. The funeral services were held on Sunday at 2 oclock p.m. March 17, 1929 at Hoskins funeral home. Rev. Lewis Mendenhall officiated at these services using as the subject of his discourse, "Life and Immortality" found in 2nd Timothy 1st chapter and a part of the 10th verse. Mr. Schaefer leaves to mourn his loss his wife, his mother, two sons Ray Schaefer of Newton, Ia., and Howard Schaefer of the navy off the western coast and two daughters, Mrs. Jesse Berry of Mediapolis, Ia., and Miss Florence Schaefer Taylor of Birmingham, Ia., One brother John Schafer (sic), Ottumwa, Ia., 4 sisters, Mrs. Hiram Hall, Chicago, Mrs. James Young, of this city, Mrs. Edgar Willis, Burlington, Ia., Mrs. Roy Hutchison, Clinton, Ia., and 7 grand children. Many friends and relatives attended these last rites. Interment in Evergreen cemetery.
