Dan was born on a farm northeast of Chancellor on Apr. 26, 1921, the son of Henry F. and Minnie (DeVries) Hoogestraat. He grew up in this area attending rural school. He served in the US Army during World War II as a cook, a military police officer and as a military instructor. On Jan. 16, 1945 he married Bernice Goeman at the Ebenezer Parsonage in Lennox with Rev. Drake officiating. The couple made their home on farms near Lennox, Tea and Harrisburg until settling on the current family farm southeast of Lennox in 1959. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by siblings: Andrew Hoogestraat Jan. 19, 1989, Sophia Dannen Apr. 1, 1998, Myron Highstreet Jan. 22, 1995 and Christine Foster Apr. 23, 1999. Grateful for having shared his life are his widow, Bernice; children: Donnis Reese and her husband, Richard, of Ferndale, WI, Virgil Hoogestraat and his wife, LeaAnn, of Roswell, NM, Cheryl Zwart and her husband, David, of Lincoln, NE and Sheila West and her husband, Michael, of Rio Vista, CA; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother: Vernon Highstreet and his wife, Mary, of Sioux Falls, SD and sister, Winifred Dannen of Sioux Falls, SD.
