Over time, Dan learned the local newspaper business by... Read More	Daniel James Voigt was born July 6, 1958 in Estherille, Iowa, the son of Jim and Garnet (Reekers) Voigt. He grew up in the Graettinger area and graduated from Graettinger Community School in 1976. Dan attended Buena Vista College and later transferred to Iowa Lakes Community College, where he earned an Associate’s degree in 1980. For most of his life, Dan was a journalist – he worked for the Estherville, Graettinger, and Emmetsburg papers at one time or another, with his most recent stint at the Emmetsburg Reporter/Democrat from 1991-2018. Over time, Dan learned the local newspaper business by holding nearly every position and came to know seemingly all the people of Palo Alto (and most of) Emmet County. He told their stories, took their pictures, and provided insight and commentary on the life and times of those communities, which he viewed as a great honor. When health issues in the past year forced him to ‘slow down’, he took a position at Emmetsburg Ford, where he worked in the service/parts department. Dan’s other careers relied on his voice, where he spent time on KICD in Spencer and later KILR in Estherville as news directors. He even spent time as a public safety radio dispatcher for both the Iowa State Patrol and Palo Alto County. He was often found behind the mic announcing for most of the sports teams at Emmetsburg HS; the Graettinger Labor Day parade; and the Sweet Corn Days Parade in Estherville. His “side hustle” was as a sound technician. Dan had his own sound equipment he would run at local events, even donning a tuxedo for ECS Auction Fest. In recent years, he was most involved as the sound technician for the Emmetsburg HS show choirs, traveling with them to competitions and performances. Dan was happiest when he was ‘behind the scenes’, whether at the sound board or behind his camera. Dan was a selfless volunteer and gave freely of his time to his community – so much so, that he was named Emmetsburg’s Citizen of the Year in 2017, an honor that he cherished from his ‘adopted’ hometown. He was a long-time member of the Palo Alto County fair board, serving as their treasurer since 2004. Dan earned many awards and recognitions, which were connected to his work behind the mic and camera – the roles he enjoyed the most. Sprint cars and racing were Dan’s personal passion, and he spent many years as a track steward, safety crew, and all-around volunteer at the Jackson Motorplex, with the rest of his beloved racing family. Dan seemed to know nearly everyone in Palo Alto and Emmet Counties and Jackson, MN. He leaves behind a huge void in the lives of all who knew him, specifically his sister and brother-in-law, Diann and John Burright of Ames, IA, his Voigt cousins, and all the friends and acquaintances he made in his efforts to lead a servant’s life. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Jim and Garnet Voigt, his aunts and uncles, and 3 cousins.
