Daryl was born July 17, 1923, at Vancouver, B.C., to Victor and Mable (Ogden) Nutley. He grew up in Seattle, spending most of his summers in Cashmere, Chelan and in the Methow Valley. Daryl was a 1941 graduate from Roosevelt High School in Seattle. He enlisted in the Army and spent most of his term in the Alaska area, receiving decorations of: American Theater Service Medal, Conduct Medal, Victory Medal and Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal. Following his discharge in 1946, Daryl started to learn the jewelry and watch repair trade by working for Bill Dobson in Seattle. Later, he went on to Kansas City, MO and graduated from Watch Maker's School. Daryl moved to Chelan in 1947, and worked for William "Bill" Gurr of Gurr Jewelry, later purchasing the business in 1949. On May 2, 1953, he was married to Marian Pickett of Chelan. They made their home in Chelan, owning and operating Nutley Jewelers until their retirement in 1989. Daryl was involved with several community and civic groups throughout his life. These included Boy Scouts of America, Lake Chelan Golf Club, Chelan Eagles, Chelan Falls Rod & Gun Club and Lake Chelan Gun Club. He served on the Chelan City Council from 1958 to 1962, Chelan Junior Chamber of Commerce and North Cascades Sportsman's Club. Daryl was also a faithful American Red Cross blood donor. He also volunteered as a fire fighter for Chelan Fire Department and Chelan County Fire District 7, spending 32 years responding to incidents, day and night. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Marian; one son, Dan (Wanda) of Chelan; three daughters, Arlene (Bob) Swarm of Federal Way, Darlene (John) Dally of Olympia, Darla "Cindy" Kingman (Mark Tomsche) of Eldridge, IA; one brother, Dr. Eugene Nutley of Redding, CA; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother. A Memorial Service will take place Saturday, March 29, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at Precht Rose Chapel, with Rev. Frank Needles officiating. Memorials may be made to Lake Chelan Community Hospital-EMS and/or Chelan County 7 Firefighters Association, Box 2478, Chelan, WA 98816. Services have been entrusted to Precht Rose Chapel, Chelan.
