Eleventh Regiment Kansas Volunteers Cavalry, Company E Mustered in February 27, 1864 Mustered out September 1, 1865 _____ CONCERNING D. A. MCCAW David Alexander McCaw, son of John M. and Anna McCaw, who died at his home northwest of Americus, Tuesday night, was born in Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana, in 1836. He came to Kansas with his parents in 1858, first locating at Berea, in Franklin County, but moved to Americus the following year. With the exception of about a year and one-half spent in the Civil War, he had since lived in this community. He enlisted in Company E, Eleventh Kansas Cavalry, February 27, 1864, and served his country until the close of the Rebellion. Of a family nine brothers and sisters, but three survive him. They are John McCaw, of Stafford, Kan.; Miss Elizabeth McCaw and Mrs. Thomas Anderson, of Americus. Mr. McCaw never was married but lived with his sister, Miss Elizabeth McCaw, at the old home two and one-half miles northwest of Americus. He identified himself with the Americus United Presbyterian Church, and was a faithful member of that denomination. Although ill health had deprived him of the privilege of attending public services for several years, he was always deeply interested in the work of the church. Funeral services conducted by the pastor, Rev. C. H. Mitchell, were held at the Americus United Presbyterian Church Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Mr. Mitchell used as a text, Psalms 90:12, “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply ourselves unto wisdom.” Mesdames C. N. Kerr, W. R. Huston, E. A. Elliott; Messrs. C. N. Kerr and W. R. Coventry, with Mrs. George Davidson as accompanist, sang several numbers. The church was fittingly decorated in white and black draperies, potted ferns and cut flowers, and there were several floral offerings. The pallbearers were W. H. Edminston, J. S. Gibson, William Grimsley, F. E. Hawkins, E. S. Kerr and Elias Moorhead. The interment was made in the Americus Cemetery where his father, mother, three brothers and a sister are buried. -Emporia Gazette, Friday, September 15, 1916; page 8, column 2
