Read More	Lyon County, Kansas Civil War Record: McCaw, James Eleventh Regiment Kansas Volunteers Cavalry, Company E Mustered in February 27, 1864 Mustered out September 1, 1865 _____ JAMES MCCAW James McCaw was born in Chester district, South Carolina, Nov. 10, 1828. He moved with his parents to Preble county, Ohio, in 1833, and again from there to Monroe county, Indiana, about a year later, and then removed to Kansas in 1858. He joined the church and was elected ruling elder in 18, and has held the position ever since. He enlisted in the army in company E, 11th Kansas cavalry, Feb. 17, 1864, and served to the end of the war. He died Feb. 5, 1899, aged 70 years, 2 months and 26 days. Four brothers, three of whom resided here, survived him. They are S. P., David, Robert and John, the latter residing at Welda, Kan. Two sisters, Martha and Lizzie still reside on the old homestead, and one sister Millie living in Colorado, who was present at the funeral. The deceased has been a resident of Americus for over forty years, and has an extensive acquaintance who join their sympathies with the other members of the family. He was of a quiet and retiring disposition, never giving offense to any one, nor intruding his views unsolicited and unasked, a Christian from the belief that it was right, and not from mercenary motives, a strict adherent to the doctrines of his brief, yet liberal enough to concede to others the same privilege, honest for principles sake, and not for profit. He had never been married, spending the greater part of his life on the old homestead with his brothers and sisters. The services were held at the U. P. church on Tuesday, Feb. 7th, at 1:30 o’clock. The funeral sermon was supplemental by the reading of the 90th Psalm. The text was taken from 2nd Samuel, 23d chapter, and first verse. The Rev. J. W. Wilson, pastor of the U. P. church, conducted the services at the close of which the remains were taken to the great white city of the dead there to await the resurrection morn and the triumphal entrance into that city “not made with hands,” to join the eternal band of those “who love the Lord,” around the great white throne, and sing high praises for ever more in one unending season of bliss, where the pangs and the sorrows of death cannot enter and the trials of this world are unknown. -Americus Greeting, Thursday, February 9, 1899; page 1 column 5 _____ Americus is having several victims to the grips. Last week, W. C. Harris died at his home, west of that place, and yesterday, Jim McCal [sic] died at his home, two miles northeast of that place.
