P. McCaw Tuesday Morning. Has Lived In Kansas Since 1858 Samuel P. McCaw was born in Chester district, S.C., Mar. 24, 1833. When he was five months old his parents moved to Preble county, Indiana, where the subject of this sketch was raised on a farm and remained with his father until 1856, when he went back to Ohio and remained two years with an older brother. In the spring of 1858, he came to Kansas, locating in this county. In the spring of 1860, in connection with his brother, he purchased the sawmill in this place, and operated it until August 1862, when he enlisted in company E., 11th Kansas Volunteer infantry. He participated in all the engagements win which his regiment took part. He was mustered out at Ft. Riley August 10, 1865, after serving his country three years, and returned to Americus, where he engaged in general merchandiseing [sic] as a member of the firm of Kitts & McCaw, which continued in business about two years, since which time he has been engaged in farming, until about four years ago when he moved to town, feeling that the laborious duties of farm life was too much for a man of his age. He has been a member of the board of education many years, in his old home district, and for years has been a staunch member of the United Presbyterian church, being one of its early organizers here. He married Miss Angie Cornenelis Clawson of Lawrence, Kas., April 23d, 1867, by whom he has had seven children, of whom Annie M. Edmiston, George W., Mary B., and Elizabeth, are still living and reside here. He died Tuesday forenoon August 13th, at about 10 o’clock. He leaves a wife, and four children, besides three brothers and two sisters. They are Davis A. and Robert P., of this place, and John McCaw of Stafford county, and Miss Elizabeth of this place, and Mrs. M. A. Anderson, of Denver, Colorado. He had only been confined to his bed about two weeks, although his present illness dates back some three weeks or more, which at first was not considered dangerous. Up to the time of his last illness, he was stronger than most men of his age, although suffering considerably with rheumatism, and the ailiments [sic] usually present with those who have passed the three scored and ten limit. His age at the time of his death was 74 years, 3 months and 19 days. The funeral services were held at the U. P. church, yesterday afternoon, August 14, at 2:30 p.m. Owing to the absence of any regular pastor for this congregation at present, Rev. Funston of the M. E. church conducted the obsequies. The funeral cortege was a long one, and as it wedded its way to the Americus cemetery where the interment was made, many an expression of regret was made for the sudden loss of one of our best citizen. The deceased was a faithful follower of the religion which had been his guide through life. He was charitable to the needy and generous to a fault, yet with a firmness of character that was unswerving, when once convinced that he was right. He was a good citizen, and his greatest goodness consisted in his being honorable and honest. To his family, he was a kind an indulgent parent, but that indulgence was never granted without the advice to always follow in the paths of rectitude, and he has reared a family that is a credit to himself, an honor to the community, and one whose ways have never caused the blush of shame to come to that cheek that now lies blanched in the cold embrace of death. The measure of a man is his strict adherence to his Christian duties, honesty and integrity in his dealings with his fellow man, and his love and consideration for his family. Such a man has fulfilled his whole duty, and of such men, the deceased was a bright example. He is gone. He will be missed by his family, a loss to the community, and the church, but his works will follow on, not be forgotten. -Americus Greeting, Thursday, August 15, 1907; page 2, column 4
