Altho 77 years of age he was active up until a few weeks before his death. Coming to Gray county in 1886 he took an active part in building the community. He was always in the lead in anything that was for the betterment of the community or its citizens and it is with deep satisfaction and real pride that his friends can look back over his record here. David Baker Hungate was born in Arkansas, December 15, 1852. He departed this life at the family residence in Cimarron, Kansas on December 30th, 1929 at the age of 77 years and 16 days. Right after the Civil War his parents emigrated to Colorado near Denver making the trip in covered wagons. Here Mr. Hungate grew up and as a young man he entered the service of the Government as a driver of an ox team freight wagon making the drive from Nebraska to Cheyenne, Wyoming. Here he had many thrilling experiences. At one time the lives of the members of the party were saved thru Mr. Hungate’s kindness to and Indian lad whose father warned them of the danger. About 1876 he and another brother came to the Smoky Hill river county of Kansas where they ran cattle for a few years after which Mr. Hungate came to Gray county about 1886, taking up a claim just south of the river and was one of the early pioneers of the county. On April 12, 1885 he was united in marriage to Theresa Neidiger by Rev. Homer Thrall a Methodist preacher of Cimarron. To this union was born three daughters and one son. While Mr. Hungate never united with the church, he was a firm believer in Christianity, and accepted Christ as his Savior. About his last conscious moments were spent with his beloved wife in listening to the Scriptures read and in prayer with her. About 1886 Mr. and Mrs. Hungate sold their place south of Cimarron and went out south of Ingalls where they took up a homestead and timber claim and they resided there until 1902, when they moved to Cimarron. In 1904 they moved to Baldwin, Kansas to send the eldest daughter to college. They came back in 1907 and went into the grocery business and continued in that until Frank was called to the World War. Mr. Hungate then took up a position with the Meridan Creamery company which position he kept until the time of his last illness. Mr. Hungate always took an active part in the civic life of the community and was elected sheriff on Gray county six different times, and always stood for law and order. He was a man beloved by all who knew him and all his friends knew him by the familiar name of “Bake” He leaves besides his beloved with, two daughters, Mrs. Ada M. Lupton of Cimarron, Mrs. Irene English of Syracuse, Kansas, one son, Frank of Cimarron: four grandchildren; one brother, S.J. Hungate of Talent, Oregon, and a great host of friends. The funeral service was held at the Community church, Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock and conducted by Rev. H.E. Stipe. A large number of friends gathered to pay their tribute of respect to this friend whom all loved. His going will be felt not only by the loved ones, but by the whole community who sympathize with the bereaved family in their time of sorrow.”—Cimarron Jacksonian, January 3, 1930.
