His parents moved to Pendleton county, when David was about twelve years of age, and a little later to Barthollemew county, Indiana, where he grew to manhood. November 14, 1844, he was united in marriage to Miss Susan M. Robertson, who shared his life's toil and proved a helpmate indeed. For 62 years and for months they traveled life's earth journey together, Mrs. Hook dying March 6, 1907. In 1856 Mr. Hook brought his family to Iowa and settled about nine miles northeast of what is now Stratford, near the old Fosher mill, owned by a Mr. Perry. Here they lived for many years. For a time he was engaged in business at Stratford, in company with a nephew, George Hook. He subsequently disposed of his interest in the store for the farm south of town, where he has resided these last years. Four children live to call him father, John B. and David J. Hook of Stratford, Mrs. Mary Williams, who with her family reside on the old homestead, and Mrs. Lois A. Hazen of Des Moines. A child, Matilda, died in infancy in 1860, and a son, William, died the 27th day of June, 1885, exactly 27 years to a day before Mr. Hook's death. This son will be remembered as a man of literary tastes and some gifts as a writer, both in prose and poetry. His grandchildren number thirteen and there are fifteen great-grandchildren, besides his nephews, nieces and other relatives, together with a host of friends, who delighted to call him, as though they were relatives, "Uncle David Hook." Brother Hook was converted and united with the Methodist Episcopal church about fifty years ago. He joined the class at Harmony Center and was from August, 1875, to December, 1881, the class leader at the appointment. Rev. Doran, commonly known as "Father Doran," held the revival in which he was converted. When the class was formed at Stratford he was transferred here and was associated with N.B. Cleveland and others in building the church at Stratford. Brother Hook had a gift of song that God blessed to the comfort of many. He sang with the spirit and hearts were touched and refreshed thereby. Of late years his song was seldom heard, but now we believe he has joined the heavenly choir, with Moses and David, and we know it is the same song they loved he loved, "Unto Him that hath redeemed us in His own blood." His favorite expression to those who sought his advice or were in difficult circumstances was, "Do the best you can." Genial, kindly and devout, he leaves a name and an influence that we may well emulate. He said he was perfectly reconciled to God's will and was ready to go. Through these last days of suffering his mind was stayed on God, and early Thursday morning he fell asleep without a moan or struggle, while there broke upon him a morn which shall never have an evening. June 27, 1912, is the crowning day of 91 years, 10 months and 15 days of sojourn among men. The funeral services were held at the M.E. church Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock, conducted by Rev. H. Albertson. A beautiful tribute was paid to the memory of this grand old man and a large number were present to pay their last respects to their departed friend.
