Emigrating westward they located in Waynesville, Warren Co Ohio where together with other Quaker families they settled in the spring of 1802. They rode on horseback into the township of Caesars Creek and settled about one-half mile north of Paintersville, altho there was no town there at that time and this portion of the country was known as the North West Territory. There in the midst of the forest", David "cleared a little patch of ground, planted potatoes and corn, and built a cabin. In the fall David and Patsey returned but left their children Jesse and Hannah in this county. It required a close watch to keep the Indians from stealing Hannah because she was the first white child they ever saw. In the spring the parents returned and spent their remaining days upon the old homestead which was here developed." John and Susanna's oldest son, David Painter, Page 2 Married Martha, a daughter of Jesse Faulkner, Of Berkley County and State of Virginia, A.D. 1786, in February on the eighth day, At Middle Creek Quaker Meeting, they were wed, Each one his and her own ceremony then said, According to the Quaker style of that early day, And they were dressed either in drab or gray. To David and Martha Painter was born 1 daughter and sons 3, While they sojourned or lived yet in Virginia...... David Painter, my grandfather, later did go, From old Virginia and settled in State of Ohio, Between the two rivers called Miami and Scioto. When Thomas, his youngest son was three years old or so, In the year eighteen hundred and one, The first white settlement David Painter begun, On what is now called the Painter's Run. With his wife Martha, one daughter and three sons, A great many hardships they did undergo, Before the boys to men 's estate did grow. In dense forest they did begin, Building a log cabin to live in. Heavy timbers they did have to chop, And prepare the land for a crop. Where Indians and wild beasts did roam, Page 3 David a good Quaker, like William Penn, Treated the Indians like Shite men, Giving thim a nice present now and then, So the Indians did David and his family befriend. David killed wild deer, turkey, and goose, While the boys played with the papoose. David buckskin knee pants did wear, A broad brimmed hat and long hair, Long Stockings, a shad-belly coat of gray, No suspenders, Quaker style in early day, He used a wooden mould board plow. Martha milked the old speckled cow, David fed and slopped the old black sow, So David and Martha got along somehow. Wife dropped corn, David covered it with hoe, Amongst the stumps corn and potatoes did grow. In eighteen years, instead of a log cabin, They had a good brick house to live in. Together 53 years they did reside, In 1837, aged 75, Grandmother died. Grandfather Painter died in 1843, His age 82 years, months 6 and days 23, They were buried in New Hope cemetery, Near Paintersville, Ohio, in Green County."
